You first saw him when he was drenched in blood.

At age eight, you weren't privy to matters of the Imperial Family. You had heard snippets of the esteemed royal family from your parents before, but you hadn't bothered to learn more about them. After all, such stuffy matters were not appealing towards a child as dreamy-eyed and curious as you.

"We, like the many men before us, are meant to serve the Imperial Family. When you reach the age of nine, you shall officially began training. When you reach twelve, you will officially began your duties."

Your mind often wandered off during this conversations. Your father was frustrated and exasperated with you — it seemed that no matter how hard he tried to beat this information into you, you didn't seem to take him seriously. You were far too kind, he said — and kindness and loyalty did not go hand in hand. In the end, the L/n family prided itself on being the Imperial Family's loyal dog.

Your father had served the Emperor. He still did, as His Majesty's butler. And so had the hundreds of people before him.

"Loyalty, Y/n — is a fickle thing. You must abandon kindness and love if you want to serve your master well. If you have a heart, it'll put you in a dilemma when you have to choose between your master and someone who is objectively right. But we, as butlers, must always have the mindset that our masters are always right."

You paid no heed to his words. Your mother was very different from your father — she was proud of your sweetness and kindness that seemed to have been inherited from her. Your father was sour-tongued and bitter, while your mother was lovely, gentle, and tender-hearted. It was an obvious choice — you favoured your mother.

And now, as you made your very first trip to the Imperial Palace — your father had pulled you along — you would bump into the boy who would change your fate.

Blonde-haired and purple-eyed, the boy looked like an angel. His hair was longer than average, just touching his shoulders. His lips were soft and pink, and his cheeks were rosy. His eyes carried a simple child-like innocence — at first glance, one would assume that the child was good-natured and caring.
