The next day, Will and Nico sat at the breakfast table with the rest of the Apollo cabin.

“Neeks, you need to eat something. You're gonna waste away like this,” Will said, gently nudging Nico’s foot with his. Nico just glared silently at his plate.

“C’mon, just an apple?” Will suggested, offering Nico an apple and a tentative smile.

“What I eat is none of your business,” Nico snapped, glaring at him. Will’s smile faltered.

“I'm just trying to help,” he said gently, placing the apple between them in the hopes that Nico might decide to take it. Nico rolled his eyes.

“Like you always do,” he muttered, standing up.

“Huh? Wait! What did I…” Will’s voice faltered as Nico turned and walked away from the dining pavilion. Will looked to Kayla and Austin, hoping they might have picked up on something he didn’t. “What did I say??”

Kayla and Austin suddenly became very interested in their waffles. Will couldn’t blame them; they clearly didn’t want to involve themselves in whatever was happening between him and Nico. He sighed.

“I’ll be right back.”

Will quickly got up from the table and hurried after Nico. It didn’t take him long to catch up to the son of Hades.

“Nico, wait! Where are you going?” Will asked, doing his best to keep pace with Nico.

“Leave me alone, Solace.”

Will chuckled without humor. “Yeah, uh, no. Can't do that.”

“Right. Because you think you know what's best for me,” Nico grumbled.

“Look, I just– I just wanna be here to support you since you're clearly upset,” Will said. Part of Will knew he was lying. He did want to support Nico— more than anything in the world— but really, he chased after him because he couldn’t stand the tightness that formed in his chest every time his boyfriend pushed him away. If Nico would just talk to him, maybe he could help, and maybe then it wouldn’t feel like he was drowning.

“Did I ask for your support?” Nico snapped back.

“Not verbally, but it's kind of what boyfriends are for , so–”

“Right, how could I forget. I'm your obligation,” Nico interrupted bitterly.

“What? No, I'm just saying–”

“Just drop it,” Nico huffed, shaking his head.

“Are you mad at me? Did I do something wrong?” Will asked, trying to get Nico to look at him.

“No, Will. Because you never do anything wrong, now do you?”  Nico snarled.

“What??”

“I told you to leave me alone, Solace. ”

“I don't even understand what we're fighting about right now,” Will said, feeling completely lost in Nico’s barrage of deflections.

“ We're not fighting, you're fighting. I'm just trying to take a walk,” Nico barked, picking up his pace and pulling away from Will.

“And I'm just trying to love you! You're the only one making this hard!” Will shouted, struggling to keep up. Nico stopped in his tracks, almost making Will run straight into him. Nico turned around slowly, a deep scowl on his face.

“…If it's really that hard to love me, why are you even trying?”

Will blinked, taken aback by Nico’s statement. “Whoa, wait, what ? No! That's not– Neeks, I– no! ”
