The fireplace crackled softly, casting a warm glow across the cabin as I curled up in bed, staring at the ceiling. I was trying to keep my thoughts in check, but all I could think about was him-Davis.

Two days into this cabin trip, and it felt like everything between us had shifted. We'd kissed. Not just a peck either-he'd made the first move. And now, all I could think about was that moment. How his lips were soft against mine, how his touch sent butterflies fluttering through my stomach. The space between us that once felt professional, and distant, was gone. Completely.

And honestly, it scared me how much I liked it.

I sighed, hugging the blanket closer to me. There was no going back now. The chemistry we had was undeniable, and every time he smiled at me, I felt my heart race a little faster. Even in a room full of people-like tonight-he made me feel like the only person there.

The sound of footsteps pulled me from my thoughts. The door creaked open, and there he was-Davis, in his sweats, looking all relaxed and comfortable. He had that easy smile on his face, the one that showed his dimples, and it did things to me I couldn't explain.

"Hey, you good?" His voice was low, gentle.

I nodded, sitting up slightly. "Yeah, just thinking."

Davis moved toward the bed, sitting down next to me with an amused look. "Thinking about what?"

I bit my lip, feeling a blush creep up. "You, mostly."

He chuckled, that deep, rich sound that I'd grown to love. "Is that right?"

"Yeah," I admitted softly, meeting his eyes. "About the kiss. About us."

He leaned back against the headboard, pulling me into him like it was the most natural thing in the world. His arm draped around me, and I rested my head on his shoulder, the scent of his cologne wrapping around me like a second blanket. "What about it?" he asked, voice teasing.

I hesitated, not sure if I should admit how I was feeling. But it was Davis, and despite everything, I trusted him. I felt safe around him.

"I didn't think this would happen," I confessed. "I didn't expect you to... make a move like that. It kinda threw me off."

Davis grinned, tilting his head to look down at me. "You're surprised I kissed you?"

"A little," I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "I didn't think you saw me that way."

He chuckled, his fingers lightly trailing up my arm. "Sadira, I've been feelin' you since the moment you walked into my office. I just didn't think it'd be right back then."

I blinked, my heart skipping a beat. "You mean... this whole time?"

"Yeah," he said, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "But I wasn't gonna cross any lines while we were workin' together. But once your case wrapped up, I couldn't keep actin' like I didn't want to see you outside of work."
