Sadira leaned back in her seat, the hum of the airplane engine steady and soothing. The adrenaline rush from Cupcake Wars had started to wear off, and the weight of everything that had happened in the last 48 hours was finally sinking in. She looked out the window at the clouds, which seemed to stretch endlessly, offering her a moment of peace.
Her mind drifted back to the show-the lights, the cameras, the excitement of being surrounded by celebrity judges and other talented bakers. She still couldn't believe it. Winning the competition had felt surreal, and the idea that her bakery, Sweets, was about to expand with the $80,000 prize was overwhelming in the best possible way. She'd finally be able to get the oven she'd been dreaming about.
That oven. The LFR-2 Double Rack Oven. She smiled to herself, imagining how much easier baking her famous caramel apple cupcakes and tiramisu would be with that beast of a machine in her kitchen. No more waiting for trays to cycle through in smaller ovens. Everything could bake at once. The efficiency would be insane.
Sadira glanced around the cabin. Most passengers were either napping or lost in their own thoughts, headphones on, watching in-flight movies. She'd been on planes before, but this trip back home felt different. There was a new sense of purpose, of accomplishment, wrapped around her like a blanket. She had done it not just for herself, but for Sweets, and for all the customers who had supported her over the years.
A flight attendant came by offering drinks, and Sadira politely declined, still buzzing from the excitement. She pulled out her phone, quickly checked for messages. Sure enough, Davis had texted her.
Davis: "Watching you on TV was the best thing ever. You killed it, babe. Can't wait to see you."
She smiled, warmth blooming in her chest. Davis had been such a huge support. Even when she'd been nervous during the competition, remembering his goofy texts had helped calm her down. The memory of his reaction when she talked about him during the interview still made her cheeks warm. She could almost hear the teasing in his voice when she admitted to the world that she had someone who made her feel like the luckiest woman alive.
Sadira chuckled to herself, remembering Chris Brown's attempt at flirting. He'd shot her a look, dimples flashing, and tried to charm her right there on set, but Teyana and Taraji had both quickly shut him down. It was hilarious. "Leave that sweet baby alone, she's got a man," Taraji had warned, playful but firm. Sadira had just laughed, shaking her head.
The interview had been lighthearted, but as they showed pictures of her bakery, Sadira had felt a deep sense of pride. The pink, white, and gold theme was more than just colors-it was her vision, her hard work come to life. She'd watched as the judges admired the elegant design. Even Gordon Ramsay had nodded approvingly, and that alone felt like the highest compliment.
She ran a hand through her hair, thinking about the moment the judges had come to her station. She'd been focused, her hands moving quickly as she mixed batter, whipped meringues, and carefully prepped each dessert. The sound of the oven doors opening and closing, the clinking of metal bowls, and the whir of mixers had filled the air around her as she worked. Every movement had to be perfect-timing was everything in a competition like this.
When the judges had approached, she'd tried to keep her cool, but her heart had been racing. She could feel their eyes on her as she moved between tasks, kneading dough and piping frosting with precision. They'd watched her closely, asking questions about her process and her inspiration. Sadira had answered as best she could while trying not to lose focus. Chris had even put on that fake British accent again, making her laugh despite the nerves.
"OK, Sadira, love," Chris had said, grinning. "What are you making us today?"
She'd smiled, explaining the array of desserts-caramel apple cupcakes, meringues, and tiramisu with raspberries. She could still see the look on Chris's face when he tried the tiramisu, despite not liking raspberries.
"For me not to like something and end up loving it-that's rare," he'd said, giving her a 10 out of 10.
Gordon had practically fallen in love with the caramel apple cupcakes. She remembered watching his expression change as he took that first bite, his eyes widening just slightly before he nodded in approval. The feedback had been everything she'd hoped for-constructive but overwhelmingly positive. Jennifer Tilly had been sweet and encouraging, while Taraji and Teyana had been full of energy, loving the creativity in every bite.
The memory of Gordon's praise warmed her again. "These caramel apple cupcakes," he'd said, "are absolutely divine. Perfect balance of sweetness and texture. You've outdone yourself."
She couldn't help but beam at the thought. His words had meant the world to her. And then, when they'd announced her as the winner, she had felt like she was on top of the world.
Now, sitting on this plane, the reality of it all was starting to settle in. She had won. Sweets was going to be bigger and better than ever. She leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes, allowing herself a moment to imagine what the bakery would look like with the new oven installed, and maybe a few more upgrades. Her loyal customers were going to love it.
As the plane began its descent, Sadira felt a mixture of excitement and exhaustion. Home was just a few hours away, and so was Davis. She could already picture his smile when she walked through the door, how proud he'd be. She checked her phone again, seeing another message from him pop up.
Davis: "Got a surprise for you when you get back."
She smiled, curiosity piqued. Whatever it was, she knew it would be thoughtful. He always had a way of doing that-of making her feel special in ways big and small.
The captain's voice came over the intercom, announcing their approach to the city. Sadira looked out the window again, watching as the skyline of New York City came into view. It was strange to think how much had changed since she first opened Sweets. Back then, it had been just her and a dream, but now she had a team, a supportive partner, and a future that looked brighter than ever.
As the plane touched down, Sadira took a deep breath, ready to step into the next chapter of her life. Winning Cupcake Wars was just the beginning. There was so much more ahead, and she couldn't wait to see where it would take her.
