A year had passed since Maya and Josh became a couple. Life with Josh had been steady and comforting; he was always there for her, always supportive and caring. He made her laugh, listened to her worries, and shared in her joys. Their relationship had grown strong, but deep down, Maya knew a part of her heart remained conflicted. She was happy with Josh, yet Gelo still occupied a quiet corner of her thoughts.
Meanwhile, Gelo had become a shadow of his former self. Though he put on a brave face for Angie and their child, his heart was elsewhere. He saw Maya and Josh together at family gatherings and social events, each time feeling a deeper ache of regret. He tried to move on, to focus on his family, but his love for Maya persisted like a stubborn flame that refused to be extinguished.
One evening, at a mutual friend's party, things came to a head. The room was filled with laughter and the soft hum of conversation. Maya and Josh stood together, chatting with friends, their fingers interlaced. Across the room, Gelo stood by the bar, a drink in his hand, his eyes fixed on Maya. Angie was nearby, holding their child, watching her husband with a weary, knowing expression.
As the night went on, Gelo’s sadness morphed into frustration, fueled by the alcohol he had consumed. He watched as Josh leaned in to kiss Maya, and something inside him snapped. He slammed his drink down on the bar and made his way through the crowd, his gaze locked on Maya.
“Maya,” Gelo said, his voice loud and slightly slurred, drawing the attention of everyone around them. “I need to talk to you.”
Josh turned to face Gelo, his grip on Maya’s hand tightening protectively. “Gelo, I think you’ve had too much to drink,” Josh said calmly. “Maybe it’s time you head home.”
But Gelo ignored him. He stepped closer to Maya, his eyes desperate. “Maya, please, just listen,” he pleaded. “I still love you. I’ve never stopped loving you.”
Maya’s eyes widened, her heart pounding in her chest. She glanced around, seeing everyone watching them—Josh, Angie, their friends. “Gelo, this isn’t the time or place,” she said softly, trying to keep her voice steady.
But Gelo wasn’t listening. In a sudden, reckless move, he pulled Maya close and kissed her. The room seemed to freeze, a collective gasp filling the air. Maya’s eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, she was too stunned to react. But then she pushed him away, her hand trembling.
“What the hell, Gelo?” Josh shouted, stepping between them. His face was flushed with anger, his fists clenched at his sides. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Gelo, still reeling from the kiss, barely had time to react before Josh’s fist connected with his jaw. Gelo staggered back, the force of the punch knocking him off balance. Angie rushed over, their child in her arms, her face pale with shock.
“Josh, stop!” Maya cried, grabbing his arm. “Please, just stop!”
But Josh’s anger was boiling over. “He kissed you!” he shouted, his voice raw with betrayal and hurt. “Right in front of me, in front of everyone! That’s not okay, Maya. That’s not respectful to you or me or anyone!”
Maya looked around, seeing the judgmental stares of their friends, the whispers, and the shocked faces. She turned back to Gelo, who was now holding his jaw, a look of regret and sorrow in his eyes.
“Why did you do that, Gelo?” Maya asked, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and sadness. “Why?”
Gelo swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to the floor. “I’m sorry, Maya,” he whispered. “I just… I love you so much, and I can’t stand seeing you with someone else. I know I’ve messed up. I know it’s my fault, but I can’t help how I feel.”
