A few days later, as she was leaving a café after meeting Tina, she spotted Gelo across the street. He was walking with a stroller, a small bundle nestled inside. He looked different—older, more serious, but also more at peace.

Maya felt a pang in her chest, but she didn’t look away. Instead, she watched as he gently rocked the stroller, his expression soft as he looked down at his child. It was a side of Gelo she had never seen before, and for a moment, she felt a flicker of something—hope, perhaps, or maybe just acceptance.

He caught sight of her across the street and paused. There was a moment of hesitation, a flicker of recognition in his eyes. For a brief second, their eyes met, and Maya gave him a small, tentative smile. Gelo nodded, returning the smile, a silent acknowledgment between them.

Maya took a deep breath, feeling a sense of closure wash over her. She turned and continued on her way, feeling lighter than she had in a long time. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew she was ready to face it, one step at a time.

A few weeks passed after Maya’s unexpected encounter with Gelo. She found herself reflecting less on the past and more on the possibilities of the future. Life was slowly but surely moving forward, and she was determined to keep up with it.

One weekend, Maya attended a mutual friend's birthday party. It was a casual gathering, a mix of familiar faces and new ones. As she mingled and chatted, she found herself drawn to a man standing by the bar. He had a friendly smile and an easygoing demeanor that instantly made her feel comfortable.

“Hey, I’m Josh,” he introduced himself, extending a hand.

“Maya,” she replied with a smile, shaking his hand.

They struck up a conversation, and Maya found herself genuinely enjoying Josh's company. He was witty, charming, and had a way of making her laugh that felt effortless. As they talked, she learned he was passionate about photography and had recently returned from a trip abroad. He shared stories about his adventures, and Maya found herself captivated by his stories and the kindness in his eyes.

“I don’t know why, but I feel like I’ve seen you before,” Maya said, frowning playfully.

Josh chuckled. “I have one of those faces, I guess. But it could be because I’m Gelo’s brother.”

Maya’s smile faltered for a moment, her mind racing. “Gelo’s… brother?” she repeated.

“Yeah,” Josh nodded. “I know who you are, actually. I’ve heard a lot about you, Maya.”

There was a pause, an unspoken tension hanging in the air, but Josh quickly added, “Only good things, I promise.”

Maya relaxed a little, though her heart was still beating fast. She had no idea Gelo had a brother. The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on her, but there was something about Josh that felt different, refreshing. She decided not to let the connection to Gelo cloud her judgment.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Josh,” she said with a genuine smile. “I’m glad we finally met.”

Over the next few weeks, Maya and Josh continued to see each other. They went on walks, had coffee dates, and shared long conversations about life, dreams, and everything in between. There was an ease between them that felt natural, and Maya found herself looking forward to their time together.

One evening, as they sat at a small café, Josh looked at Maya thoughtfully. “I know my connection to Gelo might make things… complicated,” he said carefully. “But I really like spending time with you, Maya.”

Maya smiled softly. “I like spending time with you too, Josh. And I’m not going to let the past dictate what happens now. I think we both deserve to be happy.”

They continued seeing each other, and as their bond grew, it became clear to those around them that there was something special between them. Their friends noticed, and soon, word got back to Gelo.

When Gelo heard about Maya and Josh’s budding relationship, his initial reaction was one of shock. He hadn’t expected Maya to move on so quickly, let alone with his own brother. A pang of jealousy surged through him, surprising him with its intensity. He had thought he had moved on, but hearing about Maya and Josh stirred up old feelings he hadn’t fully dealt with.

He tried to brush it off, telling himself he was just being protective of his brother. But as the days went by and he heard more about their closeness, he couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. The thought of Maya with Josh bothered him more than he cared to admit.

One evening, he decided to confront Josh about it. He found his brother at their parents' house, sitting on the back porch.

“Josh, we need to talk,” Gelo said, trying to keep his tone casual.

Josh looked up, sensing the seriousness in Gelo’s voice. “Sure, what’s up?”

Gelo hesitated for a moment, then blurted out, “It’s about you and Maya.”

Josh raised an eyebrow. “What about us?”

Gelo took a deep breath. “I just… I think you should be careful, Josh. Maya’s been through a lot, and I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Josh frowned, his expression hardening. “Are you worried about me getting hurt, or are you worried because it’s Maya?”

Gelo was taken aback by the directness of the question. “I’m worried about both of you,” he said defensively. “I just don’t want to see either of you get hurt.”

Josh shook his head, a small smile playing at his lips. “You know, Gelo, it’s funny. I think this is more about you than it is about us. Maybe you’re not as over Maya as you thought.”

Gelo’s jaw tightened. “That’s not true. I just—”

“Gelo,” Josh interrupted gently, “I really like Maya. She’s amazing, and she makes me happy. I’m not going to step aside because you suddenly realized you might still have feelings for her.”

Gelo looked down, his thoughts a jumbled mess. He didn’t know how to respond, but he knew Josh was right. There was a part of him that wasn’t ready to let go of Maya, even though he knew he should.

Josh stood up, placing a hand on Gelo’s shoulder. “I care about you, bro. But I also care about Maya. I think it’s time you figure out what you really want.”

Gelo watched as Josh walked away, his mind racing. He felt torn between his feelings and the reality of the situation. He knew he had no right to interfere with Maya’s happiness, especially after everything he had put her through. But the thought of her with someone else—especially his own brother—was a bitter pill to swallow.
