Days turned into weeks as Maya continued to recover in the hospital. Physically, she was healing well, but emotionally, she was still struggling. Gelo continued to visit, sitting quietly in the waiting room, respecting her need for space. He never pressured her to talk or see him, but his presence was a constant reminder of their complicated relationship.
Maya spent a lot of time reflecting on her feelings. She knew she still had feelings for Gelo, but she was also deeply hurt by his betrayal. She had moments where she wanted to forgive him, to let go of the pain and try to rebuild what they once had. But there were also moments where the thought of trusting him again seemed impossible.
One afternoon, as she was staring out the window, lost in thought, her doctor came in. “Maya,” he said with a kind smile, “I have some good news. You’re healing well, and I think it’s time for you to go home.”
Maya nodded, a mixture of relief and anxiety washing over her. Going home meant returning to the world, to reality, and she wasn’t sure she was ready for that. “Thank you, Doctor,” she said softly. “But I… I don’t know if I’m ready.”
The doctor gave her a sympathetic look. “It’s normal to feel that way after what you’ve been through. But you’re strong, Maya. Take things one day at a time. You have a lot of support around you, and you’re not alone.”
Maya nodded again, appreciating his words. She knew she had to face the world eventually, and maybe going home would help her start to heal.
The day she was discharged, Tina and her mother came to help her pack her things. As they were getting ready to leave, Gelo appeared at the doorway. He looked nervous, his eyes searching Maya’s face for any sign of what she might be feeling.
“Maya,” he said quietly, “I heard you’re going home today. I… I just wanted to say that I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
Maya looked at him, her emotions a jumble inside her. “Thank you, Gelo,” she said softly. “I’m… I’m trying to figure things out.”
Gelo nodded, his expression earnest. “I understand. I’m not here to pressure you or to ask for anything. I just wanted you to know that I’m still here. And I’m not going anywhere.”
Maya felt a pang in her heart. She knew Gelo was sincere, but she still wasn’t sure what to do. “I need time,” she said again. “I need time to think, to heal. I hope you understand.”
Gelo nodded again. “Take all the time you need. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”
With that, Maya turned and left the hospital, feeling a mix of relief and uncertainty. As she stepped outside, the sun felt warm on her face, a small comfort after the cold sterility of the hospital. She took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind. She needed to focus on her recovery, on taking care of herself. Whatever happened with Gelo would come in time.
Over the next few weeks, Maya tried to settle back into her routine. She spent time with her family, leaned on her friends for support, and began to slowly rebuild her life. She took long walks to clear her mind, wrote in her journal to process her emotions, and tried to focus on the things that made her happy.
Gelo continued to give her space, only reaching out occasionally to check in. His patience and respect for her boundaries made Maya appreciate him in a new way, but it also made her question what she really wanted. She knew she still loved him, but love alone wasn’t enough to erase the pain he had caused.
One evening, as she was sitting in her room, she found herself scrolling through old photos on her phone. She stopped on a picture of her and Gelo, taken during one of their happiest moments. They were both laughing, their faces close together, their eyes filled with joy. A tear slipped down her cheek as she looked at the photo, remembering how happy they had been, how in love.
