Over the next few days, Gelo found himself thinking about Maya more and more. He realized he needed to see her, to talk to her, to figure out once and for all what he truly felt. And so, he decided to reach out, hoping for a chance to clear the air and, perhaps, find some closure.
Gelo wrestled with his thoughts for days before finally deciding to reach out to Maya. He knew it wasn’t fair to her—or to Josh—to keep his feelings bottled up. He needed to face the truth, whatever that might be, and accept the consequences of his actions. Taking a deep breath, he picked up his phone and sent a simple text to Maya:
"Hey, can we talk? There’s a lot I need to say."
Maya stared at the message on her phone, her heart skipping a beat. She had been doing her best to move on, and her time with Josh had been a refreshing change. But Gelo’s message stirred up emotions she thought she had buried. After a moment's hesitation, she replied:
"Okay. Tomorrow at 3 PM at the park?"
The next day, Maya arrived at the park early. The air was cool, and the late afternoon sun cast long shadows on the ground. She sat on a bench, trying to steady her nerves. She didn’t know what Gelo wanted to talk about, but she knew she needed to hear him out.
Gelo arrived a few minutes later, looking just as nervous. He spotted Maya on the bench and walked over, his heart pounding. “Hey,” he said softly, taking a seat beside her.
“Hey,” Maya replied, her eyes on the ground.
There was a long, uncomfortable silence between them. Finally, Gelo spoke up. “Maya, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. About us. About everything that happened.”
Maya looked up at him, her expression guarded. “And?”
“And… I realize now that I handled things badly. I hurt you, and I’m so sorry for that,” Gelo said, his voice filled with regret. “I didn’t mean to make you feel like you weren’t important to me. I was just so confused, trying to figure out what I wanted, and in the process, I ended up hurting the one person who meant the most to me.”
Maya listened quietly, her emotions swirling. “Why are you telling me this now, Gelo?” she asked, her voice steady but her eyes betraying her vulnerability.
Gelo hesitated, struggling to find the right words. “Because I still care about you, Maya. More than I realized. And I hate the thought of losing you. Especially to Josh.”
Maya blinked in surprise, taken aback by his honesty. “Josh has nothing to do with this, Gelo. He’s been nothing but kind to me. And he doesn’t deserve to be caught in the middle of whatever this is.”
Gelo nodded, his gaze dropping to the ground. “I know. And I’m not trying to make this about him. I just… I don’t know how to explain it. Seeing you with him made me realize how much I still care about you. I thought I was over us, but I’m not. Not really.”
Maya took a deep breath, trying to steady her emotions. “Gelo, I’ve spent so much time trying to move on from you. And when I met Josh, I finally felt like I was starting to heal. I don’t know if I can just go back to how things were. I don’t even know if I want to.”
Gelo’s heart sank at her words, but he knew she was right. “I understand. And I don’t expect you to just forget everything that happened. I just… I needed you to know how I feel. I don’t want to lose you, Maya. Not again.”
There was a long silence as they sat side by side, both of them lost in their thoughts. Finally, Maya spoke up. “I need time, Gelo. To figure out what I want, and to think about everything that’s happened. I don’t know if I can just forgive and forget. But I also don’t want to shut you out without giving this some thought.”
