As the evening drew to a close, everyone began to say their goodbyes. Maya thanked Gelo’s family for their hospitality, feeling a genuine warmth from them. As she was about to leave, Gelo approached her, his expression tense but determined.

“Maya, can we talk for a minute?” he asked, his voice low so as not to draw attention.

Maya hesitated, glancing at Josh, who was deep in conversation with his father. She nodded, following Gelo to a quieter part of the garden.

Once they were alone, Gelo took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. “Maya, I… I need to be honest with you,” he began, his voice shaky. “Seeing you with Josh, it’s been… difficult. I know I have no right to feel this way, especially after everything, but… I can’t help it. I’m jealous, Maya. I still have feelings for you.”

Maya’s heart pounded in her chest. She had suspected as much, but hearing Gelo say it out loud made it all the more real. “Gelo, I… I don’t know what to say,” she stammered, her mind racing.

“I don’t expect you to say anything,” Gelo replied quickly. “I just needed to get it off my chest. I know you’re with Josh now, and I respect that. But I had to tell you how I feel. I can’t keep pretending like everything’s okay when it’s not.”

Maya felt a rush of emotions—confusion, guilt, and a flicker of something she wasn’t ready to name. “Gelo, I care about you too. But this is so complicated. I don’t want to hurt Josh, and I don’t want to hurt Angie or the baby.”

“I know,” Gelo said, his voice breaking slightly. “And I don’t want to hurt anyone either. But I can’t deny what I feel. I’m sorry, Maya. I just… I needed you to know.”

Maya nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m glad you told me,” she said softly. “But I need time to think, Gelo. I need to figure out what’s right for everyone involved.”

Gelo nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of longing and resignation. “I understand,” he whispered. “Take all the time you need.”

As they stood there in the garden, the night air cool around them, Maya realized that she was at a crossroads. Her heart was torn between two men, two possible futures, and she knew she had to make a choice. But for now, all she could do was take a deep breath and hope that whatever decision she made, it would lead to peace for everyone involved.

The next day, Maya found herself back at the house for another family gathering. This time, it was a smaller affair—a casual Sunday lunch meant for close family. Josh had invited her earlier that morning, and despite the complicated feelings she had swirling inside her, she agreed to come. She wanted to support Josh and spend more time with him, hoping it might help her sort out her emotions.

As she walked into the house, she could feel the familiar warmth of the family’s embrace. Josh’s mother greeted her with a hug, and his father gave her a welcoming smile. Angie was sitting in the living room, rocking the baby in her arms, while Gelo stood nearby, his gaze unreadable.

Josh, noticing Maya’s arrival, quickly crossed the room to greet her. “Hey, I’m glad you could make it,” he said with a wide smile, his eyes lighting up at the sight of her.

Maya smiled back, feeling her heart lift a little. “Of course. Thanks for inviting me,” she replied.

Lunch was a lively affair, filled with laughter, stories, and the delicious aroma of home-cooked food. Maya tried her best to focus on the joy around her, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of Gelo’s eyes on her. Every time she looked up, she would catch him glancing her way, his expression clouded with something she couldn’t quite place.
