Jiwon's uniform was soaked in Soohyun's blood, the once pristine fabric now a testament to the violent ordeal they had endured. Taehyung and Yeonjun had already tended to her wounds, though it had taken all their strength to get her to comply. Despite the countless questions swirling in her mind—questions about how they knew to find them, about the state of their wellbeing, and so much more—Jiwon's focus was unwaveringly on Soohyun. They lay side by side now, her hand clasped tightly around his, as the vehicle sped towards her family's health center. Her parents were already there, waiting for them.
"Noona, are you okay?" Yeonjun's voice was soft, filled with concern as he took a seat beside her bed. Jiwon managed a small smile, nodding in response.
"I never knew my baby boyfriend could look so good in a uniform," Jiwon teased, her hand gently brushing over Yeonjun's face. Among all the men in her life, Yeonjun had always been the closest to her, a younger brother she could confide in.
"Karina will kill me when she sees you like this," Yeonjun murmured, his voice trembling as he fought back tears. Karina had sobbed uncontrollably when he informed her about Jiwon and Soohyun's condition. She had promised to be there to help them as soon as they arrived, but seeing Jiwon like this would shatter her.
"I have a million questions," Jiwon admitted, her voice barely above a whisper as she caressed Soohyun's hand, glancing at her husband with a heavy heart. "But I know now isn't the time. I don't want to burden you."
"Noona, please trust us. We're your family," Yeonjun urged, his voice earnest. "I'm sure your parents would say the same. The truth might be difficult to accept, but it's the reality we have to face." He knew Jiwon's curiosity was gnawing at her, but revealing their connection to the most powerful mafia in the region—especially to someone like Jiwon, a high-ranking military officer who had always stood firmly against organized crime—would complicate everything.
"Just rest. We're almost there," Yeonjun added, before leaving the room to give her some peace. Jiwon's gaze lingered on Soohyun, who remained unconscious beside her, his face pale and expressionless.
After what felt like an eternity in the air, they finally arrived at the health center. Jiwon and Soohyun were rushed into treatment immediately. Soohyun was taken straight to the operating room, his condition critical. His in-laws, both seasoned medical professionals, were already prepared, but the sight that greeted them left them momentarily speechless.
Soohyun's black clothes were shredded, revealing a body covered in extensive bruises and deep lacerations. Blood oozed from multiple wounds, and his breathing was shallow, barely perceptible. But the most concerning injury was the trauma to his head—a severe contusion that had left him teetering on the brink of consciousness. The initial scans were grim: swelling in the brain, internal bleeding, and a fractured skull. They knew that without immediate and precise intervention, Soohyun wouldn't make it.
Jiwon's parents were specialists in different fields, but their combined expertise in emergency medicine and neurosurgery had saved countless lives. However, this was different—this was their son-in-law. The emotional weight of the situation was nearly unbearable, but they had no choice but to push through it. They meticulously assessed the extent of his injuries, their hands moving swiftly and precisely as they worked to stabilize him.
The surgery was grueling, lasting several hours as they carefully removed bone fragments from his skull, drained the blood clots, and repaired torn blood vessels. The swelling in his brain was their greatest concern, requiring delicate procedures to relieve the pressure without causing further damage. Every second counted, and every move they made carried the weight of life or death.
Karina nearly broke down again when Jiwon was wheeled into the room. Her friend's face was marred with small cuts, and her once crisp uniform was drenched in blood. The atmosphere in the waiting area was thick with tension. Soohyun's parents paced relentlessly, consumed by a mix of fear and anger. The news of their son and daughter-in-law being in such dire condition had enraged Soohyun's father.
