23 — Happy New Month 🗓️
"Happy new month," Emerald's excitement vibrated with a similar energy to the others in the lobby. Mike nodded, wondering what had made the new month happy. Everyone on his way up seemed genuinely excited for the new month and he didn't get why.
He wondered what was happy about turning the calendar to a new page but kept his thoughts to himself.
Maybe it's the salary, he thought and nodded to himself. That must be it, nothing else explained their excitement.
He walked into his office and stopped in his tracks, literally. Dunni stood in his office, obviously waiting for him. She stood backdropped against the bank of windows that framed his office, her back was to him so he took his time to admire her.
Even the back view was something, he smiled to himself. She turned as though she had felt his stare and beamed at him. That was the best way to describe the beautiful smile she bestowed on him. It was the highest megawatt of light that was blinding him. His heart started beating faster because he didn't trust that smile, no other reason. None at all!
"Happy new month," she walked away towards him, her honey-coloured braids swinging as she moved. He stood there mouth probably agape, he couldn't stop staring.
Maybe there is something happy about the new month after all, he beamed in return. Dunni changed her hair every month. He catalogued that information in a different compartment of his brain.
She was gorgeous, but this new hair made her stunning. It suited her face shape and made her look glowy, or maybe that was makeup. He couldn't decide, so perhaps it was both.
"Same to you," he smiled.
Dunni nodded, reached up and pulled him into a hug. One minute he was on one end of the room, the next he was enveloped in her scent. He stood in her arms shocked, but he didn't stay shocked for long. He wrapped his arms around her and held her, for one beat, two, three. He resisted the strong urge to kiss her head, choosing instead to savour the rare opportunity to hold her in his hands. He inhaled her sweet scent, stealthily. Until she stepped back.
She looked up at him, her smile intact. "Have a nice day," she turned to walk out.
"Wait," he reached out and grabbed her hand. She stopped and tugged her hand away. He reluctantly let go, then took two steps backwards away from her blinding smile. "Hmm, is everything okay?"
If possible the megawatts of her smile increased. "Why wouldn't it be?"
"Come on Dunni," He smirked to hide just how much that smile dazed him. "It's me! You don't like me enough to wait for me just to hug me?"
She tilted her head to the side a little and stared at him silently, with that high beam smile. The intensity of the beam was still intact, but now it was freaky. "Why Mike," she reached out and smoothed out his suit. "I think you have things all wrong."
Then she reached up and whispered, her lips grazed his cheek lightly. "You have a nice day now," she patted his chest twice, smiled then walked away. He finally let her go, still dazed.
He walked to his chair, disoriented. What was that? He wondered as he settled into his chair. Maybe it was all a dream, he closed his eyes, pinched himself then pulled his eyes open. Nope not a dream, if it was a dream he wouldn't let her walk away.
He shook his head to dislodge all thoughts of Dunni, it was time to focus on work. But as he tried to work images of Dunni kept appearing in his head like a slideshow. All the moments he spent with her, all the experiences he had with her. The day she crashed into him with a tray full of dirty dishes, the image of her dressed in red backlit by paintings and light in the gallery, the first time he saw her in his office.
