As the dropship hummed quietly, the conversation between the agents gradually picked up. The subtle tension from earlier seemed to dissipate, replaced by a more relaxed, yet guarded atmosphere. You leaned back in your seat, your helmet resting on your lap, trying to get comfortable for the long ride.
"So, you're the guy whose clone blew me up?" the electric Neon asked, her voice breaking the silence, laced with her Filipino accent, "-Heard you had quite the entrance, saving hostages and all."
"You all saw that?" You chuckled in response, smiling proudly as the question served as a small ego booster.
"We all did, it made the news." Jett chimed in, her voice energetic, there was a spark of admiration in her eyes.
You shrugged, keeping your tone even and playing it cool. "Just did what I had to do. When you've been through what I have, you don't sit around waiting for someone else to save you."
Jamie chuckled, shaking his head. "Man, don't let him fool you. This guy's always been like this, even back in that old K-Block Joint. We had to look out for each other. He had my back, I had his."
"K-Block? Those Quarantine facilities?" Jett asked, her interest piqued.
"Hah! More like a prison." Jamie butted in. "I sat in a cell the whole week after that. Drugged and Sedated. Only time I would come out was to get tested..." Jamie shuddered as he recalled the memories. "Did I mention I left there with a Phobia of needles?"
Jett twirled one of her knives absentmindedly, shaking her head. "No, that's never come up."
You jumped in, keeping the conversation on track. "Allow me to explain..." You briefly side-eyed Jamie with a subtle smile. "He got into a petty fight with this one kid, and... long story short they threw him into a cell."
"It was the worst week of my life... But hey, I'm better for it. Now, No one can get into my head." Jamie said proudly, lazily gesturing to his noggin.
"My parents told me horror stories of those places..." Neon's voice softened slightly, her usual bravado replaced with a rare softness.
You gave an involuntary laugh, "Oh, believe me. They're true. Whatever you've heard is true."
"At least you lived to tell about it..." Neon said with a smirk, her tone lightening.
"Alright, let's back up. You said my clone blew you up?" You questioned, your eyes gleaming with curiosity. You began to wonder how much alike you and your clone were.
"Yeah, both of my arms and the left side of my rib cage were shattered. That's what Sage said. I almost died."
