Setting: It's been a few months since Ariel and Jack's last cruise together. They've decided to go on another one, thinking it will be just like before—fun, relaxing, and filled with their usual banter. However, this time, things take a much more serious turn.
The Lead-Up:
Scene 1: Ariel's apartment. It's the day before their cruise, and Ariel is packing meticulously as usual. Jack arrives, casually tossing his duffel bag onto the couch.
Ariel: (without looking up from her packing) "Did you remember to bring the sunscreen? Last time, you forgot, and we both got burned."
Jack: (smirking) "Relax, I've got it. And don't worry, I'm not going to mess up the packing routine you've got down to a science."
Ariel: (with a hint of annoyance) "It's not about a routine, Jack. It's about being prepared. We can't just wing it like you always do."
Jack: (shrugging) "It's a vacation, Ariel. We're supposed to be winging it. That's the whole point—relax, have fun."
Ariel: (sighing) "It's fun when things are organized, not when we're scrambling because something important was left behind."
There's a tension in the air, thicker than their usual playful banter. Both feel the undercurrent but try to brush it off, attributing it to pre-vacation stress.
On the Cruise:
Scene 2: The cruise ship is as grand as they remember, but this time, something feels off. They spend the first day exploring, but their conversations are punctuated with sharp remarks and subtle digs that hint at deeper frustrations.
Jack: (as they walk by the pool deck) "Let's hit the bar before dinner. It's happy hour."
Ariel: (checking her watch) "We should head to the dining room soon. Our reservation is in half an hour."
Jack: (with a teasing grin) "You and your schedules. Can't we just relax and go with the flow?"
Ariel: (sharply) "Maybe if you took something seriously for once, we wouldn't have to worry about 'going with the flow.'"
Jack: (taken aback, frowning) "What's that supposed to mean? You always act like I don't care about anything. Just because I don't obsess over details doesn't mean I'm not serious."
Ariel: (crossing her arms) "You're serious about fun. But when it comes to important stuff, you act like it doesn't matter."
Their walk to the bar turns silent, both brooding over the escalating tension. Neither is willing to back down, each feeling justified in their own perspective.
The Breaking Point:
Scene 3: Later that night, after a tense dinner, they return to their cabin. What starts as a small disagreement quickly spirals into their biggest fight yet.
Ariel: (frustrated, pacing the room) "This isn't just about today. It's about everything! You never take anything seriously unless it's on your terms."
Jack: (raising his voice) "And you never let go of anything! Everything has to be perfect, just the way you want it, or it's a disaster."
Ariel: (angrily) "Because I care, Jack! I care about making things work, about being prepared, about our future. But you... you just coast along, thinking everything will magically fall into place."
Jack: (sarcastically) "Oh, so now it's about our future? You know what, Ariel? Maybe I'm tired of feeling like I'm always messing up because I don't live up to your ridiculous expectations."
Ariel: (hurt, her voice trembling with anger) "Ridiculous expectations? Wanting someone who actually cares about planning, about commitment, is ridiculous? Maybe I'm tired too—tired of always having to be the responsible one, of you not taking anything seriously until it's too late."
The argument reaches a fever pitch, with both saying things they've held back for far too long. It's no longer about the cruise or packing or dinner reservations—it's about deeper issues that have been simmering beneath the surface for months.
Jack: (exasperated, throwing up his hands) "You know what, Ariel? If this is how you see me, maybe we shouldn't be doing this anymore. Maybe we're just too different!"
Ariel: (tears in her eyes, voice shaking) "Maybe we are. Maybe I need someone who doesn't make me feel like I'm alone in this relationship."
Jack: (in a moment of anger and frustration, blurts out) "Fine! If that's how you feel, then maybe you should find someone else. I just don't wanna see you anymore!"
The words hang in the air, heavy and final. Both of them freeze, realizing what's just been said. The anger, hurt, and frustration are overwhelming, and neither knows how to take it back.
Ariel turns away, blinking back tears, unable to look at Jack. Jack stands there, fists clenched, regretting the words the moment they left his mouth but too stubborn to admit it.
The cabin feels suffocating, and the silence is deafening. After a moment, Ariel grabs her jacket and storms out, leaving Jack alone in the room, grappling with what just happened.
The Chapter Ends:
Ariel walks down the deserted hallway, her heart pounding and her mind racing. Jack remains in the cabin, staring blankly at the door she just left through.
Ariel's Thoughts: I can't believe it came to this. Maybe we really are too different...
Jack's Thoughts: What have I done?
As the cruise ship sails quietly through the night, the rift between Ariel and Jack feels like it might be too wide to bridge this time.
And with that, the chapter ends on the haunting note of Jack's last words: "I just don't wanna see you anymore!"
