~Chapter 51~
"Hey, mate. What are you doing here, all alone?"
Jeongin sighed, the sudden voice breaking his solitude. He didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The familiar sandalwood scent and the honeyed voice were unmistakable.
Chan approached with a warm smile, casually taking a seat beside Jeongin on the stony ground.
Jeongin shot him a brief, unimpressed glance. "The same question goes for you," he muttered.
Chan chuckled softly, picking up a small stone and tossing it down the steep slope in front of them. "I was actually looking for you," he admitted, turning his gaze toward the younger alpha.
Jeongin tensed, his breath catching momentarily before he quickly looked away, avoiding eye contact. "For what?"
"The ceremony’s about to begin. I didn’t see you anywhere, so I thought I’d check in. And here you are... taking out your frustration on that poor tree," Chan teased lightly, though his eyes flickered with concern.
"You don’t need to worry about me," Jeongin replied, his voice tight. "I’m just here to help with the arrangements, not to attend the wedding."
Chan raised an eyebrow, his smile fading just a bit. He wasn’t fooled by the younger’s attempt to brush him off. "Why are you saying that? You’re here, so you might as well attend. It’s a big day."
Jeongin let out a slow, heavy sigh, his shoulders sagging as if the weight of the world rested on them. Chan studied him closely, noting the tension in his posture and the way he seemed to be shrinking in on himself.
"What’s really going on, man?" Chan asked gently, his voice softening.
Jeongin clenched his jaw, fists tightening in his lap. "It’s none of your business," he snapped, though the edge in his voice was more of a shield than a real bite.
Chan wasn’t deterred. He leaned forward slightly, his gaze unwavering. "Maybe it’s not. But it’s pretty clear something’s eating at you. You don’t have to go through it alone."
For a moment, Jeongin said nothing, his eyes fixed on the ground. The tension between them hung heavy in the air, and the distant sounds of the wedding preparations felt miles away.
Jeongin's chest swelled up with a whiff of air to ease his heavy heart. He was in the state where he didn't want to have anyone but he needs someone to be there for him.
He took a heavy breath, looking at the clear sky as if the sky is also preparing itself for this day. "Hyung, Loving someone is my fault, and I took the unprescribed medicine.." his eyes heavy as if he was going to burst out crying.
He changed his glance to Chan, he swallowed hard of his tears threatening to escape, "I got warned again and again but ended up taking overdose now the medicine itself becoming poison for me."
Chan felt his heart having mutual turmoil with Jeongin, he somehow got what Jeongin was referring to. That's why he was so afraid to let anyone enter his heart.
He placed a gentle hand on Jeongin offering him a soft smile which he forced in thought of consoling the other one.
"And you know overdose of poison can become your strength."
