Justin's P.O.V.
While driving Selena back to my house I was worried that we were leaving her car back on school property but then, she'd told me she had her brother had dropped her off before school.
When I pulled up to my drive way I was surprised to see that my mom's shiny, red truck was parked. She was home?
"Yay, your mom's here!" Selena clapped her hands, excitedly.
"Yep, she's here." I sighed and unbuckled my seat belt. Selena copied my action.
"I don't know why you hate your mother so much. She's great."
I scoffed. "Yeah because, you're a guest. And when you leave? She's back to the same ole Pattie. Always on my case."
Selena shook her head. "Be grateful. At least your mom doesn't work all of her hours away and barely pays attention to you like some parents."
"Shit, I wish life could be like that. It would make things so much easier." Not having my mom always worrying about me and barging into my business? Hell yeah. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love her to death but, shit. Sometimes she feels more like a warden then my own mother.
"My parents." Selena began. "They're uh, well--my mom... she uh, passed away when I was six turning seven so I don't remember much about having a... mother. B-But, my dad... he's just--he started working alot. After a while, his job became his life and my brother and I rarely see him anymore. He didn't even come to Jake's graduation." She sighed.
My heart suddenly felt heavy as I thought about her situation. "Excuse me for budding but, uh, your dad-- does he know about... last fri--"
"No," she cut me off. "He doesn't and he won't. If he finds out, the only thing he'll probably do it sue them." She rolled her eyes. "Anything that involves his work..."
I didn't say anything to that because I didn't know what to say. I'd never felt so stupid and useless for words and comfort in my life. Here I am, wanting to be away from my mom as far as possible, when in reality, I didn't know what I'd do without her.
Then it hit me.
Jake practically raised her.
After fifteen minutes full of awkward silence, she broke it. "Let's go inside."
When we entered my house, we went straight for my the kitchen where my mother was laughing rather loudly. She was sitting on the kitchen table, eating a bag of pretzels. "Oh hey Justin, Selena." She grinned at us.
"Hey, mom.", "Hey, Ms. Mallette." We greeted her.
"So, what's up? What's new?" She asked us, her lady friend still on the phone blabbing in the background. Man, that lady could talk.
"People uh, people talked to me today. Th-They actually sat down with me at lunch and, walked with me out of the building when school ended." I said nervously, fiddling with my thumbs.
I swore, I thought my mom's heart stopped beating. "Carla? Honey, I'm gonna have to call you back. Justin made friends... I know right? Friends!... I thought he'd never make friends again... you too?... oh my Carla, you crack me up... Alright... Call you later... Uh huh... tell the kids I said "hi" for me... alright... yeah you two... I will... okay... thanks, bye." She hung up the phone. "I swear, that woman can talk for hours." She rolled her eyes.
