COLBY

I can feel my breath escape when Elton and I are face to face. The calmness that radiates off my body is making Elton's fellow pack-mates irritable — did they know about my gruesome actions? Of course they know! Their werewolves, a rival-and-reliable-resource when it counts. He's studied them unintentionally for the last.. 700 years. Give or take.

Elton stops walking in my direction, his mouth is moving quick and I'm content keeping my nose where it doesn't belong. My eyes are wide as the reality dawns on me. The atmosphere has grown taught. He ushers past the group he's speaking with, throwing excuses over his shoulder as he shuffles past, as gracefully as an Alpha can be, leading one of the largest packs in the States.

I take a step forward to speak but his features are somber as he guides me away from the onlookers.
"I know," I pause next to his side, his big hand is latched onto my bicep still. "I know what you did." Elton's head is downcast, facing away from me as his eyes briefly exam my face. His scouts must've made a move behind my back. I grind my teeth together and the muscle in my jaw grows taut.

"What's happened? You're lucky my guys — you're very lucky the rogues that come through are eager to clean up your mess." Elton's features are schooled into a cool facade, but his energy is electric as he faces me. His hand long since removed from my arm. He's neither upset or angry, right?
I swallow the absent vile rising to splatter across the bright green grass.
"They were Canabals.." My voice grew tight when the images flash in my head, long enough for Elton to question what's got me looking sick. "They had your sister, Amber." Elton whips his body away from me, his arms crossed whilst his finger wedges itself between his clawed teeth. I grimace as I watch him, slowly it allows my body to relax against the wooden fence. It's not a picket fence, it's more closely related to a fence used to house horses or cattle. I see them in passing whenever I take the train inland along the east coast.

"They were a mix of things, creatures beyond my knowledge.. Shapeshifters, — I know they were shapeshifters," My voice breaks off as I recall the two young-teens. "What?"
"Those assholes somehow lured these kids.. I let them go but god knows if they're bringing reinforcements or calling it justice." The last of my mumblings raise a snicker from Elton, he follows my words in the meantime. He situates himself next to me, his hands resting in his lap as he takes in the cloudy sky. I leant forward on my elbow to allow for my hand to wait palm up.
The drizzling has stopped.. and the air still resumes its muggy texture.

My arm drops as I push myself off the sharp corners of the fence pressing into my underside. He watched my movements when I swivel around. The movies were right about one thing, werewolves do smell.

"It's hard to believe you're not some random teenager, doing stupid crap past midnight while the rest of us are catching up on much needed sleep." I can see the weary lines now that my anxieties have somewhat, eased out of my system. The werewolf genesis singing in his blood, his age is significantly lengthened — but it is insignificant compared to a vampire. The age catches up with shapeshifters.

Which has me very curious, "how's your wife, and the pregnancy?" His eyes light up as his posture makes a complete 180.
I smile big as I bashfully twist my weight side to side watching his features light up. He's like a kid! My smile drifts into a smirk as my hearing dials into his excited praise.

"She's so nervous about giving birth, but shes having fun choosing different baby clothes," the reminiscing is paused, "..Our pack relies on our live-stock, and homestead, but she misses the city life."
I can feel a draft of cool air encase my body. I check to make sure no one is within earshot.

"your father called you home when you had a life back in New York.. your wife does, know about you? Right?" Elton stares me straight in the eyes as the question goes in one ear out the other.

"She's human, and I'm a werewolf. She knows..." How has she not combusted from the information? "She loves me Colby. Maybe once you've found the one, you'll realize, if they truly love you, they'll love you no matter what. The book is younger than yourself, back in the pack house. So I'm sure you get it, right?" Elton ends the conversation there, leaving me to my own musings. Im both flabbergasted from the sudden comparison from this morning to his bubbly nature. That, and he.. his answer might be the reason for my doubt.

Can someone truly love a vampire, bred from sin and persecution? My upbringing was not born into my life, but bred throughout my early stages of adulthood.
my father, was a cruel, cruel man.. consumed by rage.
