Chapter 7: Dagur bonding
August arrived back at base, greeting Viggo once again with a flourish.
"Your beloved treasure is back!" August said with a sing song voice.
"Just tell me how things are going." Viggo said with an angry voice.
"Ryker did not manage to capture the skrill, so there better be fantastic news." Viggo said, with his head down, not wanting to partake in August's shenanigans.
"Dont frown Viggo the grumpy, your going to get frown lines." a grumble form Viggo stopped August's talking.
"Sheesh, ok ok." August relented of the teasing. "My squadron managed to capture an entire pack of speed stingers, a lone stinger, 2 raincutter dragons, a mudrake, a hobblegrunt, a thornridger, 4 slitherwings, a pricklegobble and a sandbuster. Oh yeah! In addition to the 268 Razorwhips we captured." August said with a smirk.
Viggo looked up from his stack of papers with a smile on his face.
"There is that smile." August said cheekily. "Im gonna go train the newblood."
A week later
Ryker, Heather and Dagur stepped of the ship. When Ryker suddenly spoke up. "If you see a man with horns, dont be surprised." Heather's ears perked up at this.
"A man with horns?" questioned Dagur.
"Thats impossible." Says Dagur.
Ryker only grunted as he led them further and further into camp.
The sound of singing becomes more and more prominent as they were led farther into camp.
"I left my home" an angelic, magnetic voice sounded
"I left my home" sounded again like an echo, except this was overlapped by many other voices
"To join the hunters" the voice cried out again.
"Who is that singing?" questioned Dagur in awe.
"to join the hunters" the voices sounded around the camp.
"That is the one who you said was impossible." Ryker said gruffily
Heather listened closely to the lyrics, wanting to know more about the horned individual.
"The day I left, The day I left
My momma cried, My momma cried
She thought that I, She thought that I
Would surely Die, Would surely Die" the voices grew closer, and now the trio could hear the stomping of feet.
In the distance, Heather could faintly see figures.
"I left my wife, I left my wife
Cryin at the door, Cryin at the door
She knew that I, She knew that I
Would die at war, Would die at war" The figures grew closer, and heather and dagur could see exhausted shirtless hunters, running as a man with horns, and a branded dragon symbol on his chest ran beside them.
"Oh my god!" Dagur says, looking straight at the man with horns.
"I left my son, I left my son." the voices said as they got nearer.
" everyone pause and say 'welcome back General Ryker."
The marching and running haunted, as everyone stood still, stomped and saluted to Ryker shouting "welcome back General Ryker."
"At ease." Ryker says, giving them a nod before continuing. The about a thousand man continued marching on. Dagur's jaw dropped comically, staring as the hunters marched off and the chants continued.
Playin in the yard, Playin in the yard
To see his daddy leave, To see his daddy leave
Made him cry so hard, made him cry so hard
To join the army, to join the army
I left my home, I left my home" the voices grew fainter as the trio made their way down to Viggo's tent.
Without hesitation, Ryker entered. Followed by Heather and Dagur. In their sights, was Viggo. Viggo leaned forward ominously, saying "they say there are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isnt true. The other is to refuse to believe what is." Viggo says dramatically.
"Maces and Talons," Viggo proclaimed with a grand gesture, before sitting up.
"I began playing with my grandfather when i was just a boy. I always insisted on being the Honourable Viking Chief. I could never understand how he bested me time and time again." Viggo chuckles.
While Viggo shared a look with heather, before turning back.
"For years i assumed his skill transcended mine. I believed what wasnt true. But you see, in Maces and Talons, as in life the line between good and evil is often unclear. " Viggo says.
He used the piece he was holding to hit the lantern, making it swing.
"Black and white can become grey so easily." Viggo continued. "What one soul considers evil, another might consider righteous."
Viggo gestured to a maces and talons board saying. "The honourable chief who fails to see this is found to be... the fool."
Viggo suddenly changed gears as he opened his arms, saying "welcome. Brother! You must be weary." Grabbing Rykers chin.
"The dragon trade is exhausting business."
Suddenly, the cuirtan was opened by a viking, throwing in another to the floor.
"Even more so when profits wane because inventory goes missing." Viggo says with a raised brow. Unsheathing his sword from his back.
"Uh, Viggo, i only borrowed the hide to exchange for food." the viking says anxiously. "It wasn't missing more than a day." the viking says.
Viggo brought his sword to the man's throat. Looking down on the viking, before using the hilt to bring the fellow up, staring into the vikings eyes. While the viking leaned back. Viggo stepped back, before smiling and nodding at someone at the side, making the fellow be brought out of the tent.
"We're not animals." claims Viggo, putting his sword on his back.
"Rest. Much to discuss tomorrow.' Viggo claims, leading them out of the tent.
"She can stay." Viggo says, pulling heather back.
Dagur looked between Viggo and heather before leaving the tent.
Outside the tent, August was leaning on the walls, waiting for them to be done. Walking out of the tent, was Ryker and Dagur. August recalled the episode. He jogged up to Ryker and Dagur.
"Ey! Ryker!" August shouted. Ryker sighed before turning around. "Major General A. Aren't you supposed to be training the new recruits." ryker says. Dagur raised a brow at the demon man who is apparently a Major General.
"Is that how you greet a friend?" August questions cheekily, wrapping an arm around Ryker's neck.
Ryker grumnbles, turning away from August.
August looks between Dagur's curious gaze and Ryker, saying "well.. Arent you going to introduce me?" August asks accusingly.
"Dagur the deranged." Dagur says. "And you are?" Dagur asked.
"Augustine moore, other wise known as August. Major General A of the dragon hunter organisation. Now, how do you feel about yelling at people?" August bowed dramatically before getting up into Dagur's face with a questioning expression.
"Good stress reliever." Dagur replied.
August smirked, wrapping a hand around Dagur and leading him to the training grounds.
"Good, good. I think you and i will get along just fine."
A couple minutes later
"You fucking maggots i cant hear you!" Dagur shouted maniacally.
"What makes the grass grow!" shouts August.
"Blood, blood, blood!" the recruits replied, exhaustingly while throwing logs into the air while running.
"What do we do for a living, ladies?" August asks
"Kill, kill, kill!" the recruits replied.
" I can't hear you!" Dagur shouts, running along a the line, shouting at a soldiers face.
" Kill, kill, kill!" they all replied.
"Bullshit! I still can't hear you!" August joins in, shouting.
'Kill, kill, kill!" replied the dragon hunters
Later that day, as the recruits were currently suffering in the freezing sea for the last day of hell week, while...
"How did you get your buiceps so big?" questioned August in jealosy. Looking between Dagur's arms and his own leaner arms.
"Berserker prison." replied Dagur. " a lot of time and nothing to do."
"I heard something about a skrill?" asked August.
"Yeah, she was my baby. But Hiccup and his meddling friends took her away from me." Dagur said angrily yet sadly.
August patted his back. Just then, a worker came in saying Viggo wanted to speak to him. August said goodbye to Dagur, then leaving to go to Viggo's tent.
As August entered. Viggo looked up from his staring at the Maces and Talons board.
"Ah! Augustine. I need you to go back to the new base and make sure it is ready. Catch some dragons on the way too yeah!" Viggo says.
"Yes Sir!" August says, giving Viggo a playful salute before setting off. He wanted to go see if the skrill is around here, to go and give it to Dagur, if he doesnt end up betraying the dragon hunters and run away that is. Which will be a pity, as he was so nice to talk to.
At 12, he gathered all the trainees onto the ship, gave them a map and flew off.
