But I ain't worried about it right now (right now)
Keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
I ain't worried about it right now (right now)
Swimming in the floods, dancing on the clouds below
As the days passed, we became more accustomed to life on the island. Many of the choirboys found that their cloaks made good blankets, which they slept under at night. Some of them offered to share theirs with some of the schoolboys. Others found sleeping under their blazers to be just as comfortable. I even found out that the uniform sweater vest made a thin but adequate pillow.
Food was extremely limited, but not terrible harmful. Once we got over the weird late-night stomachaches and diarrhea we accumulated from the fruit of the island (Percival had to be taken to the forest in the middle of the night multiple times), it wasn't so bad. Sometimes the little kids, or, as everyone was calling them now, "littluns", liked to catch a fish or a crab and eat that instead. It was a small selection of food, but it was something. And besides, beggars couldn't be choosers.
While the idea of rescue seemed like a far-off fantasy sometimes, we still got a chance to know each other. The warm mornings were spent picking fruit and trying to catch fish, and the blazing hot afternoons were spent in the water playing Marco Polo. Percival, the littlun who had pestered me with questions about my campfire fairy story, introduced me to the other boys in his hut-Bill, Johnny, and Henry. The four of them liked to hear me tell fairy stories that I would make up, and sometimes they added some parts to it. Sometimes they would tell me about their life back home-attending an all-boy's school, what their favorite after-school activities were, the wild escapades they had gotten into during recess, everything. I told them a little bit about my life as well, and told them some stories about my father.
"So, in the end, he was a very kindhearted man who was taken before his time," I concluded one of my stories. Bill sniffed, Johnny blinked back tears, and Henry slung a comforting arm around Percival, who had tears streaming down his face. "And while he died too young, his final act was to protect you guys. Protect all of us."
One day, I decided that something ought to be done about our clothing which, in addition to becoming encrusted with dirt, was starting to smell a little bit. I spotted Ralph on the shore with Simon and the littluns, who were excitedly undressing and jumping into the water.
"Ralph?" I called as I ran towards him. "Ralph!"
"Y/n?" The boy turned around, in the middle of pulling off his shirt. "What's going on? Come join us, we're about to play in the water!"
"I can see that," I noted. "But I think we should do something about our clothes first. They're getting awfully dirty, and they're also starting to smell-"
"I think it's fine," he said, pulling off his shirt. "We'll be okay, Y/n. I think we'll have bigger things to worry about. But if you want to wash your clothes, go ahead. Come on and join us!" I suddenly felt awkward, taking off my clothes in front of the other boys.
"Uh..."
"Come on, it'll be fun!" he said, grinning as he pulled off his shorts. I supposed if I just left my underthings on...
"Well, okay," I said. It's only awkward if you make it awkward. I unbuttoned my shirt and slipped off my skirt, leaving on my under things. While I hadn't grown much in my bosom, it was still enough that my mother took me out shopping for brassieres one day. Ralph was already swimming around in the water, laughing and having the time of his life. I gingerly edged my way to the water, aware of how exposed I was but trying not to care.
"Get in!" Ralph's head popped up from under the water as he waved me in. "Come on, it's so hot out!"
"Okay, okay, I'm coming!" I called, laughing as I dove into the water. I shot up, gasping and screaming, "COLD!!" Ralph laughed at my reaction.
"It's cold," I said defensively, playfully splashing him.
"What, like you're not used to it?" he asked, playfully splashing me back.
"Ralph, I just got in," I said, rolling my eyes good-naturedly at him. "I'm still really cold." However, I found Ralph to be right. Once I swam around a bit, the cold water was quite refreshing in the morning sun. I spotted Piggy on the shore, watching us.
"Hey, Piggy!" I called out encouragingly as Simon peacefully floated by on his back. "Come join us!"
"No thanks," Piggy called back. "I can't swim on account of my asthma."
"SUCKS TO YOUR ASS-MAR!" Ralph yelled through cupped hands. "SUCKS TO YOUR ASS-MARRRR!!" I laughed as I watched Maurice leap out of the water and snag Ralph around the neck, dunking him.
"HEYYY!" Ralph cried, popping up back from under the water as I roared with laughter. Maurice popped up, also laughing. With a mischievous gleam in his eye, Ralph leapt up at me and snagged my waist, dunking me underwater.
"HUH-HEYGHLGHLGHL!!" I cried through a mouth of saltwater. I shut my eyes and held my breath just in time. We both came back up, laughing.
"Oh, you asked for it," I said teasingly as I lunged out at Ralph. Someone else snagged me from behind and dunked me.
"Hey!" I cried, laughing as I looked behind me. "Maurice, you're supposed to be on my side!"
"Who said anything about siIIIIIDES!!" Maurice cried as Simon came up from behind him and tackled him (without much strength, I noticed) into the water. I laughed at their horseplay. Soon we were all tackling each other into the water and popping back up under the bright morning sun. Our joyful laughter filled the air as we frolicked in the waves.
It was one of the few times I remembered seeing everyone so happy and together.
"D'you think we'll get back?" Ralph said thoughtfully, lying on his back. It was nearly the afternoon (as far as anyone could tell), and Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and I were lying on our backs, sunning ourselves while drying off. Some of the littluns stayed in the water, while others went to build sand castles. Maurice, who had "fire duty", had went up to the mountain to tend to the fire.
"I sure hope so," I answered, my hands folded on my stomach, which was starting to feel a little hollow and empty.
"We will get back," Piggy said confidently. "S'long as we keep the fire going and obey the rules on the island."
"I agree," Simon said. I noticed he had his magic rock in his hand, which he rolled between his fingers. "Why wouldn't we? And besides, it's kind of nice here-I've always wanted to see the ocean."
"I doubt we will get back sometimes." Ralph rolled into his side. "You know? Sometimes I get worried we'll get stuck on the island forever and ever and no one'll come rescue us." I rolled onto my stomach so I was facing him.
"We will get rescued," I said confidently, never believing something so strongly before. "I know we will. We're going to get off this island and we're going to be okay."
Hey, y'all! Sorry for this chapter being a little short. So as you can see I decided to continue this story. I figure I have nothing to lose, even if my writing isn't perfect, and I'm just trying to feel things out on this website at first. I'm trying to get over the self-doubt that I have going on, so I figured I would just throw the rest of the story up on Wattpad. I might be posting new chapters every week, but I need to work out a posting schedule with myself first. But definitely expect updates on this story (even though they might be inconsistent).
Other than that, have a great day! Also don't forget to comment and vote-it would mean the world to me 😊
