Chapter 5
Amina's eyes wandered around the room, taking in the sights and sounds of the charity gala. She had been mingling for a while, but her mind kept drifting back to the enigmatic Omar. Where was he? And why did she care?
Just then, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned to see Omar standing behind her, his eyes piercing as ever.
"Excuse me," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I couldn't help but notice you've been staring at me all night. Are you a stalker?"
Amina's heart skipped a beat. Was he joking? She couldn't tell. His expression was as aloof as ever.
"Maybe I am," she replied, quick-witted as always. "But I'm still waiting for my restraining order to be approved."
Omar's lips curled into a smirk. "Interesting. Very interesting."
Amina's cheeks flushed. Had she gone too far?
But Omar just chuckled and said, "I'm Omar, by the way."
Amina's heart raced as she shook his hand. "Amina. Nice to meet you, Omar."
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, Amina felt like she was drowning in their depths.
"Likewise, Amina," Omar said, his voice dripping with amusement. "I think we'll get along just fine."
As they parted ways, Amina wandered alone through the crowded hall, her eyes scanning the room for a familiar face. She had been mingling for hours, but the noise and chaos were starting to overwhelm her.
As she turned a corner, she stumbled upon a serene pool, its calm waters a stark contrast to the bustling event. She approached the edge, lost in thought, and didn't notice the step down. Her heel caught on the edge, and she felt herself falling.
Time seemed to slow as she realized she couldn't swim. Panic set in, but before she could even scream, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her out of the water.
Amina coughed up water, her eyes scanning her rescuer's face. Omar's piercing gaze met hers, his expression unreadable.
"You can't swim?" he asked, his voice low and even.
Amina shook her head, still trying to catch her breath.
Omar's grip on her waist tightened as he lifted her out of the pool. "Interesting," he said, his tone aloof. "Very interesting."
Amina's father rushed to their side, concern etched on his face. "Amina, are you okay?"
Omar nodded curtly. "She's fine. But we should get her to a hospital, just in case."
Without another word, Omar scooped Amina into his arms and strode towards the back door, her father following closely behind.
At the hospital, Omar waited silently as the doctors examined Amina. Her father tried to engage him in conversation, and Omar made an effort to be polite.
"Thank you for your concern, sir," Omar said, his voice still low but slightly softer. "I'm just glad I was able to help."
Amina's father smiled, his eyes warm with gratitude. "We can't thank you enough, Omar. You're a true hero."
Omar's expression remained stoic, but he nodded slightly. "It was nothing, sir. I'm just glad Amina is okay."
As they left the hospital, Amina turned to Omar. "Thank you again," she said, her voice sincere.
Omar's gaze met hers, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "Interesting," he said, his voice low. "Very interesting."
But then, he turned to Amina's father and said, "Sir, please don't worry about Amina. I'll make sure she gets home safely."
Amina's father smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Thank you, Omar. I appreciate that."
Omar nodded, his expression still reserved but slightly more relaxed. "It's no trouble, sir. I'll take care of her."
And with that, he escorted Amina and her father to their car, his eyes scanning the surroundings as if ensuring their safety. Amina felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized Omar was trying to be polite, almost... gentle. But only almost.
