AS THE TRIO looked out the small attic window, Eduardo slapped himself on the face.
"Say what?" asked Solomon, while Lisa looked on in puzzlement.
"Argh!" replied Eduardo. "I forgot! When I was down in the courtyard earlier, gathering together supplies for Lisa's experiment, I heard two guys talking. I was going to tell you earlier, but forgot, when I saw that you were locked out of the attic. Then, we helped Lisa set up her lab experiments. So, I totally forgot." He looked down at the floor.
"What did they say?" she asked him.
"They were talking about how most of the zombies were gone, so they were going to start hunting and killing the living." He had a tortured look on his face.
"Uh, thanks for letting us know, eventually." Solomon smiled.
Lisa patted Eduardo on the shoulder. "It's all good. We are safe here."
Eduardo grimaced. "But it's not so great for those in the courtyard."
They peered out the window again. Two guys were struggling with a third. The third guy had a knife in his hand.
Eduardo pointed down at the young men. "Check that out. The one with the knife is wearing a torn-up strip of red fabric that's wrapped around his arm."
Lisa peered out the window. "Is he one of those who remain from Fifi's gang?"
"Must be," Solomon answered. "Anyway, those two got the knife away from him. Good job!"
"Should we even bother seeing if anything is left in the cafeteria?" asked Eduardo. "I'm getting hungry and tired of eating candy and pop."
"Okay, let's go," said Lisa. "And now we know your hiding spot for the ladder, we can split up if you want."
Eduardo smiled. "Don't forget to bring weapons, and be discreet. Even if those two guys are helpful, I just don't want to deal with any more humans at this point in time."
Solomon strapped his homemade knife belt around his waist. The pointed part of the knife was encased in a protective strip of leather for extra protection. He patted it, then helped them lower the ladder to the floor, then prop it against the edge of the hatch edge.
"Wish there were stairs down," Lisa commented.
After everyone was down, Eduardo carried the ladder to the ladies' washroom and placed it in one of the stalls. He even locked the stall door, then slipped beneath it and out.
"Okay, let's go," he said.
The three of them discreetly crept to the cafeteria. From the outside, it appeared that no one was inside.
"Let's go," said Eduardo, pushing the door open. "It's getting dark and we don't want to do this in pitch darkness." No one was seated at any of the tables, but that probably hadn't happened for days now. Now it was take the food and run.
Lisa quietly closed the door behind her, while Solomon checked all the tables for any discarded food. He grabbed a set of salt and pepper shakers, and what must have been a cookie, and tossed them in his bag.
Then they heard sounds coming from the kitchen.
