THE TEAM of three friends lounged around their attic space.

"I kind of like it here," said Lisa, "but it will be good to go home and check on our families."

Solomon nodded. "Yes, the military will help us clean up, then get us to where we need to go."

"I wonder what happened to Spence?" asked Eduardo. "He just upped and left. Twice."

Lisa laughed. "Obviously he went to go and do what he had planned originally. He just wanted to warn us about the bombing."

Then they heard sounds from below the hatch, which was now open.

"Hey, come on down and party!" called out Mira. "Juan has gotten us some wine."

"Okay, be right there," Eduardo replied.

Lisa looked at the spots where the foam mattresses were. "Guess we'll need to wash these up after the losers left." She held Muffin in her arms.

"Yep, glad that they were taken into custody." Solomon grabbed the top sheet and tore it off for her. He bundled it up and tossed it into a laundry box.

"Maybe I can get back to my vaccine project," she said.

"Great!" replied Solomon. "Are you going to inject yourself to test it?"

She had a good chuckle. "No. You had a good point. Once the military comes and picks us up, I'll release it to their lab and they can help me out once I return from my visit. Though I should mention, I did inject those two losers with it."

Eduardo looked in amazement at her. "Say what? You tested it on those two jerks?"

She nodded. "Yes, it was their time to be rabbits. Why should we have all the fun?" She placed Muffin back in his cage.

The trio hopped down to the floor below.

"Uh, I wouldn't tell Captain Gee that, or whatever her name is," suggested Eduardo.

Lisa smiled. "Don't worry, I'm not stupid."

They headed outside, to the courtyard. There was a lot of activity there. The military had seized the packaged cafeteria food and was guarding it. They would divvy it up to the survivors later.

The bodies of the dead were being carried to a pickup truck where they'd be taken to a crematorium for disposal. It was unknown if a dead zombie could pass the infection on to others, but they weren't taking any chances.

Gee came over to the group. "We'll leave at daybreak tomorrow if that's okay by you. Lots of work here."

"Great," said Eduardo. "Lisa and Solomon can't wait to be reunited with their families if they're still alive."

Gee looked confused. "Uh, what about you?"

"Oh, my family are long dead. My parents left me lots of money so I could attend University. And that's why I'm staying here to rebuild."

"Oh, why did you not tell us before? So secretive," said Lisa, giving him an unexpected hug. Solomon decided to join in too.

"Well, feel free to get your rations from over there, where they are guarding the food boxes. I'll see you in the morning." Gee left to take care of business.

"Let's hope that Spence has made it back home safely," said Solomon.

"Yep, but we can keep an eye out for him on the way back home tomorrow." Eduardo headed over to where tables and chairs were set up for the party ahead.

Lisa looked in the distance at the trees and thought she saw Spence's figure there, but then shook her head. She was just imagining things.
