LISA AND SOLOMON sat in the hallway. They'd tried to find a ladder but with no luck. They heard footsteps coming from down the hall.

"Hey, it's Eduardo!" called out Lisa.

"Hey, where have you been?" asked Solomon. "We couldn't find the ladder to get back up."

Eduardo chuckled. "Did you look in the ladies'?"

"Say what?" asked Solomon, looking at Lisa.

He pointed to the ladies restroom in the distance. "I hid the ladder in one of the stalls there."

Solomon and Lisa gave each other a confused look.

"I'll go get it for you." Eduardo came back a minute later.

"Cool," said Lisa, as she climbed up the ladder. "Let us know next time. What if you never came back?"

Eduardo laughed. "You would have just built your own ladder." Then he looked back at the entrance to the library. "Oh, almost forgot! I have a surprise for you!"

Solomon handed her heavy backpack up to her, and then his. She carefully placed them on the floor of the attic.

By the time Eduardo was back, he carefully deposited a large box at her feet.

"What's this?" she asked, as she dropped some pepperoni bits into Muffin's cage.

"Oohh, someone is starving," joked Solomon. He grabbed the pepperoni from her and continued feeding their pet zombie rat.

"Lab supplies. You can set up your own lab here, in safety. No need to work in the school labs anymore. It's just not safe there, as I'm sure you figured out."

"Wow," she said, peering into the box. "Microscope, slides, vials, bottles, and even a small Coca-Cola beverage fridge! Oh! Except we lost power."

"Oh, I had an idea about that. Please don't let the lack of power stop you from your experiments. I saw a gas-powered generator when I was out and about. I haven't had a chance to grab it yet."

"Wow, cool," said Solomon, as the rat pretended to still be starving to death.

"Hey, look at that!" said Eduardo, pointing at Muffin. "His eyes are back to amber, from bright lime green!"

"I know!" replied Lisa. "I think his immune system is fighting off the zombie virus and winning!"

"Then maybe there is hope for the human race yet." Solomon smiled.

Eduardo picked up the box. "Let's get Lisa set up and assist her. Maybe she can combine our blood with the rat's to make the perfect long-lasting vaccine, not something that has to be given every six or eight months."

They found a spot in the middle of the attic, away from the light and warmth of the artificially-created window.

Eduardo pulled a table over for her to set up the equipment, while Solomon pulled down some of the canvas drapes and arranged to hang them over the beams for her new lab.

She was happily beginning her first experiment when they heard gunshots coming from the courtyard. The team rushed over to the one window in the attic roof and peered out.

"What the?" proclaimed Solomon. "Those are no zombies."

"The humans are fighting each other!" exclaimed Lisa.

Eduardo beckoned them back to the lab. "We're safe up here. I'll keep watch."
