Chapter 09
The night was tranquil, its stillness broken only by the soft rustling of leaves and the distant hooting of an owl.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery light that filtered through the dense canopy of trees surrounding Cloud Recesses. It was an ideal night for a hunt, but not just any hunt , a Night Hunt.. a sacred tradition of the Lan Sect, designed to protect the region from malevolent spirits and rogue creatures, and real good chance to spend time together for this love birds.
Lan Wangjee and Wei Wuxian moved in perfect harmony through the forest, their are blending seamlessly with the shadows. The air was cool, and the scent of pine lingered as they ventured deeper into the woods. The weight of the task at hand hung between them, yet the silence they shared was not uncomfortable.
For Wei Wuxian, there was an electric thrill in the air, a sense of anticipation that quickened his pulse. He feels free after long time.
Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but steal glances at Lan Wangjee, whose expression was as composed as ever. But he knows Lan Wangjee is Happy. There was a quiet strength in the way he moved, each step measured, every movement calculated. It was a stark contrast to Wei Wuxian’s own more spirited demeanor. Yet, he found comfort in Lan Wangjee’s presence, knowing that whatever they faced tonight, they would face it together.
As they neared a clearing, the atmosphere shifted. The air grew colder, the familiar sounds of the forest muted, replaced by an unsettling silence.
Wei Wuxian’s instincts flared, something was here, something powerful.
He paused, closing his eyes to focus on the spiritual energy around him. It was dense, almost suffocating, and laced with malice.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian whispered, “it’s close.”
Lan Wangjee gave a slight nod, his hand tightening around the hilt of Bichen. They advanced cautiously into the clearing, where the moonlight was pale and eerie, casting long shadows that seemed to dance and flicker at the edge of their vision.
Wei Wuxian began to chant softly under his breath, his voice low and melodic. The ancient words of the incantation rolled off his tongue with ease, his aura brimming with energy.
The ground beneath them trembled slightly, and the mist that had begun to form swirled ominously in the center of the clearing. Then, with a bone-chilling wail, the malevolent spirit appeared, a formless mass of darkness that writhed and twisted as if in agony.
The temperature dropped further, the cold seeping into their bones as the spirit’s presence grew stronger. Wei Wuxian stepped forward, his eyes narrowing in concentration. With a fluid motion, he raised his hand, and a dark energy pulsed from his fingertips, swirling around the spirit to form a barrier.
The spirit screeched in fury, lashing out against the invisible walls that contained it, but Wei Wuxian held firm, his control unwavering.
Lan Wangjee moved in beside him, Bichen flashing in the moonlight as he drew his sword. His movements were swift, precise, and deadly. He struck with a force that sent shockwaves through the clearing, his spiritual energy merging with Wei Wuxian’s to create a powerful offensive.
The spirit, though formidable, was no match for their combined strength. It writhed and shrieked, its form becoming more and more unstable as they continued their assault.
As the battle raged, Wei Wuxian felt a surge of exhilaration. This was where he belonged, in the thick of it, fighting side by side with Lan Wangjee. Their energies complemented each other perfectly, Lan Wangjee’s steady, disciplined power balanced by Wei Wuxian’s more chaotic, creative force. Together, they were unstoppable.
Finally, with a final, agonized wail, the spirit began to dissolve, its dark form breaking apart and dissipating into the night air. The clearing, once filled with malevolent energy, was now still and peaceful once more.
Wei Wuxian lowered his hand with Chen Quing, breathing heavily but with a satisfied grin on his face. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Lan Wangjee sheathed Bichen, his expression softening as he turned to Wei Wuxian.
“You were incredible,” he said, his voice low and full of admiration.Wei Wuxian chuckled, brushing off the compliment with a wave of his hand. “Just doing my part.”
But before they could leave the clearing, a figure emerged from the shadows, Lan QiRen, his expression unreadable. He had been observing from a distance, ensuring that the Night Hunt was executed with precision.
His presence immediately caused Wei Wuxian to stiffen, though he quickly masked his discomfort with a respectful bow.
“Shifu,” Wei Wuxian greeted, his voice steady.Lan QiRen’s eyes flickered between the two of them before settling on Wei Wuxian. “Your skills are evident,” he said slowly, you controlled the dark energy with ease, his tone devoid of the usual sternness. “You handled the situation well.”
Wei Wuxian blinked, taken aback by the unexpected praise. “Thank you, Shifu, It was an honor to assist.”
Lan QiRen’s gaze softened, if only slightly. “We will discuss this further in the morning.”
With that, he turned and began to walk away, his robes billowing behind him. Wei Wuxian exchanged a glance with Lan Wangjee, who gave him a small nod of approval. They had done well tonight, and perhaps, just perhaps, Lan QiRen was starting to see that.
As they made their way back to Cloud Recesses, the tension that had hung over them all evening began to dissipate.
The success of the Night Hunt had not only reaffirmed their bond but had also demonstrated Wei Wuxian’s value to the Lan Sect.
Lan Wangjee’s pride in Wei Wuxian was evident, though he expressed it in his usual understated way a gentle touch to Wei Wuxian’s shoulder, a lingering look that spoke volumes. Actually, that was not enough. Wei Wuxian was covered with peppering kisses.
The night air was cool, the stars twinkling overhead as they walked in comfortable silence. Wei Wuxian’s thoughts drifted to the future, to the challenges they still faced. But for now, as they returned to the safety of Cloud Recesses, he allowed himself to savor the victory, knowing that whatever came next, they would face it together.
