Chapter 13
Lan QiRen’s study was a sanctuary of order and tradition, bathed in the soft glow of lantern light.
The room was meticulously arranged, with rows of scrolls, texts, and ancient tomes lining the walls, each placed with careful precision. The scent of incense filled the air, its smoke curling lazily towards the ceiling, adding a sense of solemnity to the atmosphere. The only sound was the quiet rustling of papers as Lan QiRen sat at his desk, his brow furrowed in contemplation.
Lan Wangjee and Wei Wuxian had returned from their successful Night Hunt, but there was no time to rest. Lan QiRen had requested a private meeting, and the gravity of the situation weighed heavily on both of them.
The walk to Lan QiRen’s study had been silent, the tension palpable. Wei Wuxian could feel his heart beating in his chest, each step bringing him closer to a confrontation he had long feared.
As they entered the study, Lan QiRen’s gaze lifted from his papers, his eyes briefly flickering between them.
There was no immediate warmth in his expression, but neither was there the cold disapproval Wei Wuxian had half-expected. Instead, Lan QiRen’s demeanor was calm, measured a man weighing the situation before him with careful consideration.
“Sit,” Lan QiRen instructed, his voice steady and authoritative.
They both complied, taking seats across from the elder. Wei Wuxian kept his posture respectful, though his mind raced with possible outcomes.
Lan Wangjee, ever composed, sat with his back straight, his hands resting on his lap, though Wei Wuxian noticed the slight tension in his fingers.
Lan QiRen studied them in silence for a moment, his gaze sharp and discerning. Finally, he spoke, his tone as even as ever. “I have been observing you both,” he began, his words deliberate. “And I have noticed the depth of your relationship.”
Wei Wuxian felt his heart skip a beat. The words hung in the air, laden with meaning. He exchanged a quick, worried glance with Lan Wangjee, who remained impassive but whose eyes betrayed a flicker of tension.
Lan QiRen continued, his tone giving little away. “You have shown dedication and skill, Wei Wuxian. Your contributions during the Night Hunt were commendable.
However,” he paused, allowing the word to linger, “the nature of your relationship with Lan Wangjee complicates matters.”
Wei Wuxian took a deep breath, steeling himself before stepping forward slightly. “Shifu,” he began, his voice steady but respectful, “I understand that my past and our relationship may raise concerns. But I assure you, my intentions are sincere. I am committed to contributing to the Lan Sect and to respecting its traditions.”
Lan QiRen’s eyes softened, though only marginally. His expression remained thoughtful, his gaze assessing Wei Wuxian as though weighing the truth of his words. “Sincerity alone is not enough, Wei Wuxian,” he replied, his voice firm but not unkind. “The Lan Sect is built upon a foundation of strict principles and traditions that have guided us for generations. Your past actions, though not without merit, have often run counter to these principles.”
Wei Wuxian swallowed; his throat suddenly dry. He knew that his reputation preceded him, his unorthodox methods, his disregard for rules, and his willingness to embrace demonic cultivation had all set him apart from the rigid structure of the Lan Sect.
Yet, here he was, determined to prove that he could be more than just the YiLing Patriarch, more than the rebel who defied convention.
“I understand the gravity of my past actions,” Wei Wuxian said, his voice unwavering. “But I have changed. I want to honor My Lan Zhan and the Lan Sect. I am willing to learn, to adapt, and to contribute in a way that upholds your values.”
