Chapter 14The tranquility of Cloud Recesses was not always guaranteed. Despite the serene beauty and strict order of the Lan Sect's home, the threat of external dangers loomed constantly.
Rogue cultivators, malevolent spirits, and the lingering effects of past conflicts were just a few of the challenges that could disrupt the peace.
As a result, the responsibility of maintaining security within Cloud Recesses was a critical and ongoing task.
Wei Wuxian, eager to further prove his dedication to the Lan Sect, decided to volunteer his services. He understood that trust was earned through action, and by helping to safeguard the very place that had welcomed him, he hoped to strengthen his bond with the sect members and show them that he was as committed to their safety as any of their own.
His first day on the job began early in the morning, as the mist still clung to the mountains surrounding Cloud Recesses.
Wei Wuxian met with Lan Wangjee-as Leader of the Clan, and the head of the security team, a seasoned Lan cultivator named Lan Yueheng, who had initially been wary of Wei Wuxian's past and his unconventional methods.
Lan Yueheng regarded Wei Wuxian with a scrutinizing gaze, his hands clasped behind his back in the traditional Lan posture.
“YiLing Laosu,” he began, his voice calm but firm, “securing Cloud Recesses is no small task. We follow strict protocols, and we value discipline above all else.”
Wei Wuxian bowed respectfully. “I understand, Senior Lan. I’m here to learn and contribute in any way I can. I promise to respect the protocols and work within the boundaries of the sect’s rules.”
Lan Wangjee stood middle of them , his calm presence a silent endorsement of Wei Wuxian’s commitment.
“Wei Ying’s skills are unique,” Lan Wangjee said, addressing Lan Yueheng. “His expertise in certain areas of cultivation can enhance our defenses.”
Lan Yueheng nodded, though his expression remained cautious. “Very well. We will see how you perform.”
The first task assigned to Wei Wuxian involved coordinating with the patrols that kept watch over the vast grounds of Cloud Recesses. These patrols were made up of experienced disciples who took their duty very seriously.Wei Wuxian joined them on their rounds, observing how they conducted their duties and offering suggestions where he thought improvements could be made.
At first, the disciples were hesitant to accept his input. Wei Wuxian’s reputation as the YiLing Patriarch, with all its dark connotations, was difficult to overlook.
However, as the day wore on, it became clear that his suggestions were not only practical but also highly effective. He proposed subtle changes to the routes taken by the patrols, ensuring better coverage of vulnerable areas and reducing the likelihood of gaps in security.
The most significant challenge came when they reached the outer perimeter of Cloud Recesses. This area, where the spiritual energy was weaker and the terrain more difficult to navigate, had always been a point of concern for the Lan Sect’s security team. It was here that Wei Wuxian’s true abilities shone.
“We’ve had trouble maintaining stable wards in this area,” Lan Yueheng explained as they examined the perimeter. “The natural flow of spiritual energy here is disrupted, making it difficult to establish effective barriers.”
Wei Wuxian nodded thoughtfully, his mind already racing with possibilities. “I see the problem,” he said after a moment. “The spiritual energy is too turbulent here, likely due to the ley lines beneath the surface. We’ll need to create a stabilizing anchor point to balance the energy before we can set up the wards.”
Lan Yueheng looked skeptical. “And how do you propose we do that?”
Wei Wuxian smiled, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of excitement and determination. “I’ll show you.”
He began by drawing a complex array on the ground, using his own spiritual energy to trace the intricate patterns. As he worked, he explained his process to the others, who watched with a mixture of curiosity and wariness. The array was designed to tap into the disrupted lay lines, redirecting their energy into a stable flow that could then be used to power the protective wards.
Once the array was complete, Wei Wuxian stepped back and motioned for Lan Yueheng to activate it. The elder cultivator hesitated for a moment, then channeled his own spiritual energy into the array. The ground beneath them hummed with power as the lines of the array lit up, casting a soft, bluish glow over the area.
Slowly, the turbulent spiritual energy began to settle, the chaotic flow smoothing out into a steady current. Wei Wuxian nodded in satisfaction.
“Now we can set up the wards.”
With the foundation in place, Wei Wuxian worked alongside the other cultivators to establish a series of protective wards around the perimeter. These wards were not only strong but also flexible, designed to adapt to changes in the spiritual energy rather than break under pressure. By the time they finished, the area was significantly more secure than it had been before.
As they completed their work, Lan Yueheng approached Wei Wuxian, his earlier skepticism replaced with a newfound respect.
“You’ve done well, Wei Wuxian,” he said, his tone more approving than before. “Your methods may be unconventional, but they are undeniably effective. The security of Cloud Recesses is stronger because of your efforts.”
Wei Wuxian smiled, his heart swelling with pride. “Thank you, Senior Lan. I’m just glad I could help.”
Lan Wangjee, who had been observing the entire process, stepped forward. “Wei Ying’s contributions are invaluable,” he said quietly, his voice filled with pride. “He has proven that he is not only a skilled cultivator but also a dedicated member of our sect.”
The words of praise from both Lan Yueheng and Lan Wangjee did not go unnoticed by the other disciples. Over the following days, the atmosphere around Wei Wuxian began to change.
The wariness and suspicion that had once surrounded him started to dissipate, replaced by a growing sense of acceptance and respect. His peers began to seek out his advice on various matters, and he found himself increasingly involved in the daily operations of the sect’s security measures.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian stood with Lan Wangjee on one of the high terraces overlooking the grounds. The two of them watched as the patrols made their rounds, the new wards glowing faintly in the twilight.
“You’ve done more than just help with security,” Lan Wangjee said softly, his voice filled with warmth. “You’ve shown them that you belong here.”
Wei Wuxian looked at him, his expression one of quiet satisfaction. “I want to be a part of this place, Lan Zhan. Not just for you, but because I’ve come to care about the people of my family , my sect. I want to protect them, just as they protect me.” A small drop of tear escapes from corner of eyes.
Lan Wangeei’s hand found his, their fingers intertwining as they stood together, the peace of Cloud Recesses settling around them like a comforting blanket. “You are part of this place, Wei Ying,” Lan Wangjee whispered. “You always will be.”
As they stood there, side by side, Wei Wuxian felt a deep sense of belonging. He had come to Cloud Recesses seeking acceptance, and through his actions, he was feared about this, but now he had earned it. His contributions to the security of the Lan Sect were more than just physical barriers against external threats—they were also symbolic of the barriers he had broken down between himself and those who had once viewed him as an outsider.
For the first time since he had arrived, Wei Wuxian felt truly at home. He knows this is his home for his entire life.
