“Luke?” I breathed, trying to calm myself down. Did Luke just witness me making out with River? Well, I thought, this is embarrassing.

I sat up now, River quickly following. I brushed myself off from all the dirt that now covered me. I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say, to either of them. It was silent for moments, which really felt like an eternity. Finally, I said something.

“Luke, what are you doing here?”

Luke walked forward a bit, but not too much. I could feel River tense, which was abnormal. Luke still looked the same, but had that quality to him that I’ve never seen before. He looked weak and broken, inside and out.

“I asked your brother where you were,” he said, pausing. “He said he didn’t know, but to try this place.” He inched forward more, so he was standing only a few meters away from River and I.

“Oh, well… you found me.” I said, but regretting it soon after. What a stupid thing to say.

“Yeah, I guess I did.” Luke replied, shifting his glance over to River. River seemed quiet, but also unstable. Something wasn’t right here, and I wanted to know what.

“Um… Luke, this is River, River, this is Luke.” I said, trying to make a proper and formal greeting. I was nervous, really nervous.

“We’ve met.” I turned to River now, confusion cascading through my thoughts and emotions. River was eyeing Luke like he did something unimaginable. How did these two meet? And what a coincidence they meet again, with me.

“What? When?” I asked, wondering what was going on.

Luke decided to take the reins on this one.

“It was a competition in Toronto, more along the lines of an international competition. Almost every skateboarder was there, from all over the world. River and I met and competed. End of story.”

Ok, so that made some sense, but why are they eyeing each other like they want to kill one another?  At the same time, that didn’t really explain why they’re both acting like total sworn enemies.

“Okay then. Well, I guess I should go now,” I turned to River giving him a sympathetic smile. “Bye, River.” I turned around to go when somebody caught my arm. River spun me back around into a tight embrace. It was cold in the park, but    River’s body heat quickly warmed me up.

“Call me if you need anything,” he whispered into my ear. “And I don’t regret what happened.” He let go of the hug, and kissed me lightly on my cheek. His swift peck was still tremendously soft and warm. I quickly turned around, hoping that Luke didn’t see what just happened.

I stepped down from the pavement, and walked away from River. Luke slowly turned after me, and from the corner of my eye, I could see him giving a dirty look towards River. Jerk, I thought.

Honestly Luke was really starting to irritate me. He was always in the way of everything, and could never let me make my own decisions. Sometimes, I really wish I stayed at school that day when I met Luke. But I guess fate has its own planes for me.
