Lucifer, Lute, and Singe landed in front of the Heaven embassy. It served as a beacon of light and a harbinger of fear. The giant clock ticked away. Seven days left. Only one short week until the dreaded attack on the hotel. No doubt Adam and the rest of the Exorcists would give it their all and not stop until the hotel was less than rubble and the inhabitants were puddles of blood.

“It's so bright,” Singe had to cover her eye slightly, the glow of the tall hourglass-like building much brighter than anything else in all of Hell.

“All of Heaven is bright, “Lute responded, the topic of Heaven not one she wanted to remain on.

“I know but… still!”

The trio walked around the center of Pentagram City for a while, talking about various things unrelated to the Extermination. They kept the mood light, and Singe kept throwing sarcastic remarks at the other two. She was quick on her feet and even faster with her mouth.

They had walked for hours, but suddenly Lucifer's phone rang. It was Mammon, the sin of Greed, “Shit. You two go on ahead, I gotta take this.”

And with that, Lucifer teleported away in a flash of fire, leaving Lute and Singe alone. So it seemed.

“You go down there and make sure they get a good warning. This is your first mission, don't disappoint me.”

“Understood, Adam. I'll go now.”

Adam nodded at his new subordinate, then in a flash of light, teleported away. There was another flash of light and the Exorcist that Adam was talking to had also teleported away. Teleported to Hell.

Dolores kept to the alleyways, keeping a low profile. She couldn't let her guard down for a second, as if any Sinner saw her, she'd be good as dead.

She looked up to the sky and saw two sets of wings. She ignored them at first, but then saw the black stripes on the inside of one of the sets. Dolores immediately identified Lute, and made sure not to lose sight of the trio flying through the air.

Dolores couldn't wait to give Lute what she deserved for going soft. And she also was very intrigued to see who the brat Charlie and Vaggie adopted was. There was no way she'd reveal herself with Lucifer anywhere near them, though. She waited. She'd have her chance soon enough.

When Lucifer teleported away, Dolores knew she had her chance. She waited in an alleyway, ready for when Lute and the kid would pass by.

Lute and Singe kept walking and talking. They had grown quite close over the past few weeks. Singe saw Lute as a best friend and someone she could talk to. Lute saw Singe as someone who would listen to everything, and someone who she needed to protect at all costs.

Lute and Singe were suddenly stopped as an Exorcist stepped out of an alley. She wielded a long chain which had a dagger welded to the end of it. It was all made of pure angelic steel, not just the blade. The X that represented their left eye was designed differently. This Exorcist was important.

“I've found you.”

Singe shrunk back and Lute tensed up at the almost mocking tone of the special Exorcist. The Exorcist stepped closer to the duo, twirling the blade of her dagger.

“So you're Singe, eh? The stories are true. And Lute… wow, you've fallen to a new low. And not just figuratively,” The Exorcist chuckled darkly as she saw the young, single-eyed girl cowering slightly.

“What are you doing here? Extermination Day isn't for a week still,” Lute's voice trembled slightly. Had Adam sent down Exorcists early? Was Hell in for a surprise attack?

“Oh I'm not here to kill you two. Just to send a fair warning to never mess with Heaven again. In fact, we have a proposition for you, Lute,” The Exorcist's evil grin somehow grew wider.

“How do you know our names?” Singe spoke up, her voice quiet.

“I guess I should introduce myself. Dolores, Adam's new subordinate and Lieutenant of the Exorcist army. I've seen and heard about you both. And I can't wait to kill every single one of you next week,” Dolores’ voice became very dark and threatening as she spoke that last sentence, “Lute. I have an offer for you. Adam wants you back, so he's willing to let you back in Heaven provided you help us end that stupid little hotel bullshit.”

Lute was faced with a decision. Go back to her life in “paradise” and be forced to kill those she has come to care about… Or stay in Hell and be on the receiving end of Heaven's wrath. Although on the surface, this question should have taken a lot of time and consideration, Lute immediately answered with confidence.

“I'm staying, fuck Heaven,” Lute pulled Singe closer to her, holding her in a protective embrace.

Dolores’ grin grew wider, which didn't seem possible. It looked like she wanted Lute to say no. The glowing chain seemed to come to life, and with a flick of her wrist, her chain wrapped around Singe, and pulled her away from Lute.

“Consider this a warning,” Dolores grabbed Lute by the shoulders and spun her around. Lute, who normally had impeccably fast reflexes, wasn't fast enough to stop what was happening, “to never mess with Heaven ever again!”

Dolores took the dagger that was on the end of her chain and plunged it into Lute’s wing. She tore at her wings multiple times while muttering degrading comments such as. “you've gone soft” – “you deserve damnation” – “Exorcist wasn't a job for you”.

Lute yelped each time the dagger was pushed into her wings. She struggled to hold back tears as the ruthless Exorcist ripped and tore her wings apart. Dolores didn't stop until Lute’s wings were nothing but a few strips of broken and bloody feathers.

“See you soon,” and Dolores teleported back to Heaven.

Lute collapsed to the ground and Singe, now free from Dolores’ chain, rushed over to Lute's side, “Lute! Holy shit… that was…”

Singe helped Lute back to her feet, supporting most of her weight, “I've got you. Come on, Lute. Say something!”

Singe was worried that Lute would fall unconscious. She was bleeding profusely, and too heavy to carry very far for the fifteen year old. Singe called quite a few people. Lucifer, Charlie, Vaggie, Angel Dust… no answer from anyone.

Singe ripped her sleeves and pant legs to try and use as makeshift bandages, but even they could only do so much.

“I won't go back up there. I promise.”
