I'd taken August by the hand. Led him upstairs to the attic, or as he had referred to it, the love nest.
The room was dark. The only light came from the moon and the stars through the skylight above. I dropped down on the edge of the mattress, depositing the wine before reaching for the lighter. I lit some candles. Just enough to give the room a cozy, warm glow, before opening the wine. I poured us each a glass before passing one to August.
"To the first night of the rest of our lives together," I toasted. When we had clinked our glasses together and each had a taste, his much more demure than my own, I took both drinks and set them down on the floor before flopping back against the pillows.
I stretched my arm out as I waited for him to join me.
He only hesitated for a moment, but I'd recognized it just the same. My guy was nervous. He settled down against me, head on my shoulder, arm stroking my chest as I pulled him close.
I let my fingers play in his hair as I gazed up at the stars above. Usually the night sky calmed me, but tonight I was excited. The idea that he was anything but however... "What are you afraid of?" I whispered, shifting my gaze towards him.
He had his hand up my shirt. His fingers playing amongst my chest hair. He had a thing for my chest, I'd noticed, which was fair, since I definitely had a thing for his ass.
"I—I'm not."
Yeah, right. Perhaps try not to studder next time. It's a lot more convincing that way.
"Babe."
He sighed. "Fear of the unknown, I guess. Not knowing how I'm gonna feel come tomorrow. How I'll... change."
"You think you'll change?"
"I don't know. Didn't you say I couldn't defy you, or something like that?"
"Ah, sweetie. That's—that's not what I meant. I was upset and it didn't come out right. Once you're marked, you'll feel secure. Content. We'll become even closer, more in sync and as a result, less likely to argue, that's all. I didn't mean you'd lose your voice, or that headstrong will of yours. I'd never want that. To be perfectly honest, I find your rebellious side to be rather hot."
He snorted. "Hot?"
"Mmn, yeah." I grabbed his hair, pulling him closer until my lips met his. "Sexy." I kissed him. "Very intoxicating. It makes me want to conquer you."
"Pfftt..." He burst out laughing. The nervousness that I'd felt from him deep in the pit of my stomach, had been replaced by a giddy, bubbly feeling. A sweet effervescence, much like the wine we were drinking.
"Besides, that Alpha wolf of yours, he's not going to let anybody mess with you. He's made that clear."
August sighed.
Fuck. What now? I had just got him to relax, mellow out, but now I could feel him tensing within my arms.
He sat up and turned to face me. "You know I'm not tho, right?" He said quietly.
I rolled on my side as I reached my hand out to touch him. I made little circles with my finger on his upper thigh. "Not what?" I asked absently. My hand was creeping higher.
"Both you and Zeke seem to think that I'm an Alpha—"
"And why is that; do you think?" My hand dropped back to his knee.
He shrugged. "My wolf, I guess. I've been told that he's stronger than most."
I nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, he is, and do you know why?"
