We sprung Zeke from the hospital before the employees arrived for first shift. The sky outside was still black. With winter soon approaching, dawn was at least an hour off. Nurse Rebecka wheeled Zeke through the hallways to a side entrance that was only ever used by employees. It exited next to the staff parking lot, where an unmarked ambulance waited.

As soon as we stepped outside, two attendants exited the vehicle. A man and a woman, both dressed in navy and looking very much the part moved to escort Zeke to the back of the vehicle.

I turned to Ray. "You have an ambulance."

He nodded as we stood back watching the EMT's argue with Zeke over whether or not he needed to get onto the gurney. "Yeah. It's from our clinic." Ray looked at me. "You know, you should probably come along and get checked out too."

"That's not a bad idea," Zeke bellowed from the back of the wagon. The attendants had finally been successful in getting him strapped onto the stretcher. "You should ride along."

I shook my head. "No can do. I've got a situation back at my hotel room."

"You really should be examined by our doc," Ray said as they closed the back doors and the female attendant moved to the cab. "I don't know if Alpha Zeke mentioned it or not, but we couldn't wake you; it was a little unnerving."

I thought about it. Not that I needed or wanted a check-up, but I didn't get a chance to question Zeke about the assault. If I dropped by later to visit it would give me the opportunity to find out what had gone on.

"Your wolf must be a freak!"

I glanced at him as we began walking. "What?" The ambulance was finally pulling away.

He regarded me. "Strong, I mean. Freakishly strong. I've never seen someone heal that quickly from a bond before. Mind you, Zeke and you are both Alpha's so maybe that has something to do with it." He gave me a broad smile. "The Doc's gonna have a field day over this."

I frowned. "How so?"

"Well, no doubt Dr. Davies will have sent her the x-rays and records from the hospital. And when she compares them to whatever tests she decides to run on Zeke, she's gonna flip out. One thing's for sure. She's gonna wanna meet you."

We had reached the car and he hit the fob to unlock the doors. I wasn't sure how I felt about that. Still there was no sense worrying about it until the time came.

"You sure you don't wanna come drop by the clinic?" Ray asked once we were buckled in.

"Can't. Like I told Zeke, I gotta deal with something back at the hotel."

"That blonde chick?" He was pulling out of the parking spot. "She your girl?"

"My girl? Nah." I turned my attention to gaze out the window. "She's, my assistant."

"Oh."

I glanced at him from the corner of my eye. I heard an awful lot of judgement in that tiny little word. "You got something to say?"

"Oh! Uh, no. No. I mean, you're an unmated wolf, so I'm not one to judge if you're busy messing around with a human... but do you normally have your assistant spend the night in your hotel room? It just seems a bit dicey if you ask me."

"Then you understand my predicament."

We drove in silence the rest of the way back to the hotel. Once we arrived, I unbuckled as soon as he pulled up out front.

"I'll text the others to head down so they're out of your way."

I nodded as I climbed out.

"Hey." He called before I was able to close the door. "You gonna drop by later? Zeke's gonna wanna know. He's concerned about you."
