Draco walked through the garden, the weight of his emotions heavy on his shoulders. The garden, once a place of solace, now felt like a witness to his pain. As he made his way to a bench, he noticed Emma approaching him, a mix of determination and anxiety in her demeanor.
"Draco," Emma called softly as she reached him. Her eyes were red, and she seemed like she had been crying. She held an envelope in her hand, her grip tight as if it were a lifeline.
"Emma," Draco greeted, trying to mask his surprise. "What’s wrong?"
Emma took a deep breath, clearly struggling to keep her composure. “I wanted to give you something.” She extended the envelope to him, her fingers trembling slightly.
Draco took the envelope, noting the lack of any mention of a wedding or formalities on the outside. “What’s this?”
Emma swallowed hard. “It’s an invitation to my wedding with Josh. It’s happening soon.”
Draco’s heart sank as he read the words “Wedding Invitation” on the card. The reality of Emma’s commitment hit him hard. He looked up, seeing the pained expression on Emma’s face.
“Emma, I... I don’t know what to say,” Draco managed, his voice catching.
Emma’s eyes were filled with a mixture of sadness and regret. “I didn’t want it to be this way. I’ve been struggling with my feelings and everything that’s been happening. I almost told you how I felt, but everything got so complicated.”
Draco could see the turmoil in her eyes, a silent confession lingering between them. “Emma, if you’re having doubts, if there’s something you want to say—”
Emma shook her head, her voice trembling. “I’ve had to put my feelings aside for now. I know it’s not fair, but my family and Josh have expectations that I can’t ignore. I’m sorry, Draco. I wanted to tell you, but...”
Draco took a deep breath, trying to process the flood of emotions. “Emma, it’s okay. I understand. You have to do what’s right for you and your life.”
Emma nodded, tears brimming in her eyes. “Thank you for understanding. I wish things could have been different.”
Draco placed the invitation on the bench, looking at Emma with a mix of sympathy and sadness. “I guess this is goodbye then.”
Emma nodded, struggling to keep her composure. “I guess so. I hope you find happiness, Draco. You deserve it.”
As Emma turned to leave, Draco watched her go, the finality of the moment settling over him. The invitation in his hand felt like a painful reminder of what could have been. He sat down on the bench, feeling the weight of his own emotions, but also a sense of acceptance.
The garden, with its fading light and quiet surroundings, provided a bittersweet solace. Draco knew he had to move forward, even if it meant letting go of the feelings he had harbored for Emma. The journey ahead would be challenging, but he hoped that, in time, both of them would find a way to heal and embrace the paths their lives had taken.
