Chapter 5
The following day, I needed to extend a dinner invitation to Uchi. I was already half asleep and half busy to be bothered in taking part in dinner that night. I had complained to my mom "I don't think I'll be having dinner with you guys today. I'm still really busy, and Uchi probably is too. Can we just do it another day?"
"Oh, come on Yokota! You've made a friend since 3 years ago! It seems to me you've mellowed down quite a bit! Has Tsukishima been helping you communicate better? He's been visiting a lot lately before you started school, so that must be it...Or maybe it's that new friend of yours! Or your volleyball team..wait did you even join a volleyball team yet..."
"I mean Ma, Tsukishima has been helping me socialize a little more with other people, and my team helps too, I guess. But I think with Uchi, he makes me not want to talk ever again. He's too talkative..."
"Ohh! Right! Okay, just make sure you tell your friend that he's invited to our house for dinner once you reach school, yes?"
"Okay Ma, bye now. I love you." I glanced back, Ma was waving and smiling back at me as I exited out the house.
"Bye dear! Have a nice day!"
Once at school, I had brought a face mask and scarf in my bag so I could disguise myself from the rest of my classmates, hoping that when I saw Uchi, he wouldn't spill my cover. At homeroom, there were the same people from every day with their usual gossips and rumours they have made up about me. "Hey, you know, I heard that your classmate Yamaguchi is a famous actor and singer! That's why he looks so cute and is popular in the school! I wonder if I should get his autograph..."
Actor? Me? Phft, I don't think I'll ever be looking at an acting career anytime soon. Suddenly, Uchi came in heading towards me table as usual. When he spotted the same beanie, he saw the other day, he almost yelled out my name "Hey Ya-" until my glare caught Uchi's attention, making him pause midway through his sentence.
"Uh hey friend! How's it going friend!" He lightly snickered in embarrassment.
"Hey Uchi." I replied.
"So, how's your other friends doing, friend?"
"Yeah, they're alright. Say, my mom, the person you met yesterday, wants to invite you over to dinner today, Tsukishima and Tadashi will be there too."
"TSUKISH- I mean friend! You can't say that name in public or your classmates will figure out who you are!" he silently yelled at me, checking vigorously behind if anyone of my classmates overheard our conversation.
"Don't worry, no one in this school other than the team knows who they are-"
"Yokota?! Is that you?"
A girl with a strangely familiar voice said, peeking inside my classroom. Me and Uchi turned our heads towards the door to our classmate, where she was wide-eyed to hear some familiar name."Yokota? Me? Nuh uh! There's no way that I'm 100% Yokota! Who's that person anyways? Never seen him in my life! Not me at all! Hah!" I blurted out, hurriedly thinking of an excuse as to why I wasn't 'Yokota'.
"But that beanie!" She called out. "I was the one that gave you that beanie!"
"Miyoko Kawazaki?"
"Yeah! Remember me Yokota? We were childhood best friends, but I moved out! I came back last year too! Happy to see you here!"
I sighed; my cover had just been blown by the worst person I could have possibly thought of. Not only my classmate knows I'm here, but I had to explain Uchi the whole situation, and he was flabbergasted. I got out of my seat, and marched straight towards Miyoko at the doorway, whispering to her "Hey! You just ruined my perfect cover! I was tryna hide from my stupid classmates of mine, but you had to show up out of the blue!"
