Chapter 8
After horrendous weeks of training and an awful number of hours each player around the nation endured just to get ready for this one event, comes a new challenge every high school team must now face. The Inter high preliminaries.
Uchi was able to get enough practice that he'd finally learn how to properly pass normal serves and jump floats, redeeming his new title of second worst receiver after Masato, though he's still learning how to get a pass from a jump serve.
Just outside the Kamei Arena Sendai, (Yes, the gymnasium had recently changed their name from Sendai City Gymnasium to this...) our team, Karasuno had just arrived from the buses, reading the notices on the wall by the entrances of who we were all playing in our block. Katsu was at the front of the group, then turning to us all "Listen up everyone! Today is the day we show the world what we're made of! Got that?" Hyping everyone up just before entering the gym.
"We've won before, and we'll do it again! Are you all with me?"
"YES CAPTAIN!!" The team cheered back.
"Great! Our school will be cheering for us, so don't let them down!" Katsu pushed the door open as it flung out, revealing the different and diverse school we were going to go up against in the preliminaries. As soon as our team entered, we'd already receive many glares from many people.
"Woah, isn't that Karasuno the powerhouse?"
"Hey look! The flightless crows now called the almighty crows of Karasuno..."
"I don't really feel like we stand a chance against them-"
"Hey guys! Just ignore their taunts, just focus on the game and we'll be alright!" Masato reassured us from behind.
Once we reached our designated locker room before the introductions, Katsu pulled Uchi into the corner of the room, whispering something quick into his ear. It was sudden, but Uchi had yelled out "YES CAPTAIN! YOU CAN COUNT ON ME!"
What was that about?
"Don't worry Uchi, I know you can make our school proud!" Katsu replied loudly with pride.
"What did he say to you?" I pondered to Uchi.
"It's a little secret!" He responded with a wink and a broad, yet menacing smirk. I scrunched up my face and narrowed my eyes in disgust. In return, I countered with a menacing chuckle directed at Uchi. "HAH?! ARE YOU TELLING ME TO BACK OFF IDIOT??"
"YAMSY NOO!! NO YAMS! I was just teasing you a bit and I thought you would understand it as a joke!! I didn't mean tooooo!" He hid away behind Masato who was minding his own business, not noticing Uchi was there and moving to another spot to do something. Uchi was now exposed to me.
"YAMS! DON'T HURT MEE-!" He screamed, making himself into a ball, and acting like a child on the ground. If only he could see his very own face, it would have been too hilarious!
"Chill, Uchi...I'm not going to hurt you. You're my friend, bro." I offered my hand to Uchi since he was hiding away like a coward. "Get up, come on. The game's starting soon."
"OH- Yeah! Thanks, Yamsy!" he helped himself up, rubbing his right arm against the back of his head, red-headed and flustered.
"Hey everyone!" Katsu interrupted the little conversations around the locker room. "We are playing one of the first games in the Inter high, so have your spirits up! Believe that we can make it to the very end and do not ever give up!"
