Chapter 16
(Third person POV)
Just as the ball had touched the floor of Tokonomi's court, Yokota caught a glimpse of Hotaru's face, a face distinguished with shock and confusion as his body was flat on the ground, just inches from where the ball had landed.
He had hoped to save the ball with a pancake dive, but failed because his arm wasn't long enough to reach it. His position on court had also affected his result.
Hotaru was placed in the far-left corner just as Yokota had sent the ball into their court, and his view of the court had been obstructed by a few of his teammates, thus there were hardly a clear sight of the full court, making it difficult to see exactly where the ball was headed.
He clenched his right fist and slammed it into the ground with defeat. "My reaction time was too late... Dang it!" He grunted, turning away to face the floor.
The rest of Tokonomi just stood there, bewildered, looking around and back at the spot where the ball had landed.
'What just happened...' Thought Fujimori.
'How did we not see it through that trick?' another added.
'Is this the true power of a powerhouse??' Yuji wondered; his eyes wandering through Karasuno's team, now settled on Yokota's faceless expression. 'How could we have been so blind? The only reason we came this far was because of everyone's hard work, but encountering such a powerhouse like them so early? Our dreams would be crushed in no time! And I thought playing Aoba Johsai's practice match was hard!'
"Yuji. You're overthinking again."
Hotaru had just came behind Yuji's back, killing the dark mood he had earlier. He recovered from his 'depressing' aura he had just minutes before.
"S-sorry."
"Even if we do win, we're still going to encounter many more stronger teams, with even stronger players. But you can always trust your team. Just because Karasuno was called a 'powerhouse', doesn't mean they'll stay that way forever. I'll cut their wings off if it secures our win."
Yuji faced Hotaru and stared right into his eyes. With a nod, he returned to his position, preparing for the upcoming serve. He thought to himself as he headed back.
'Hotaru wasn't entirely right, but he wasn't wrong either. Karasuno did used to be called the 'Wingless Crows', so we can make them get that title back. But it's not like before. They've evolved, evolved to something we can't reach. This- is the true meaning a powerhouse. Karasuno.'
