((At the end of the chapter, I'll add the players who are in the starting line-up and the other benches characters of the team so y'all don't have to be confused who is playing or not. SRY ABT THIS THOUGH ITS KINDA COMPLICATED RN))
"Looks like we have to play a full set this time!" Katsu groaned, placing his hands on his waist just as the referee whistled, signalling the end of set 1. His face didn't tell me how defeated he was, but how even more determined and excited he started to feel to play the next set. "Tokonomi's a hard team to beat for sure!"
"You want to play a full set? What if Tokonomi wins the next set? So, it wouldn't be a full set then, yeah?" Masato mumbled, coming beside Katsu.
"Well, of course I won't let them get away with winning the game! It's us who's going to be victorious! -"
Katsu was stopped by Coach Ukai yelling to the team, "Hey everyone! Come over here and we'll discuss some strategies!"
(3rd person POV)
Meanwhile, Hotaru was experiencing a raging emotion within. The rage blurred his thoughts; how could he encounter the former middle school teammate who nearly took over his cherished position? He observed Yokota returning with the group, his expression was steady, in contrast to the storm raging in Hotaru's mind.
'Yamaguchi... what are you doing here? You should have quit a long time ago... shouldn't you. Why are you even the starting setter for your team?? You'll see that I'll be better than you today! You'll see, and when you do, you'll regret ever playing the sport again! There's no setter better than me, you hear that?!'
"Oi, Sakurai! The coach wants to talk to everyone! Come on!" called a teammate of his.
Hotaru took one last glimpse of Yokota before walking back to the sidelines. "Oh, sorry. I'll be coming now!"
(Back at Yokota Yamaguchi's POV)
Back with the group, Uchi pointed at Hotaru who was carefully eyeing us, with such a dreadful and characterless stare.
"Sheesh, that guy does love staring, but at who?"
"He's my middle school captain, Uchi." I told him.
He looked at me, then back at him. Hotaru had finished his stare and heading back to the sidelines towards him team.
"He's really your captain? He looks kind of short to me..."
"Uchi! Not all setters have to be tall! It's just it's better to have a taller setter because you get more of an advantage! Plus, he's only 5'9, he isn't so short that many people call him that- "
"He's still taller than Shigeo though!"
"Alright everyone." Coach Ukai called out, ending my conversation between Uchi and I. The attention from Hotaru watching us was shifted back to the coach's call. "We know that number 9 can cause trouble, but it's not always just him. You've all been eyeing him throughout the match for his speed dump, weren't you all?"
"Yes sir!"
"Well, since almost everyone's attention was at number 9, the rest of Tokonomi had the chance to shine and steal the points. We don't want that don't we?"
"Right!"
"Alright. I'll be switching up the players this set. Since there are two new substitutes who were playing for the second half of the first set and they were just told to watch for the speed dumps, I need people who's got good focus on different things. Of course, I'll need Nazumi and Shigeo, or Yoshimoto and Uchi in replace of Shigeo once in the front. But we won't be needing Uchi, so I'll switch him with Chihiro." He explained.
