'A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.'

Proverbs 11:13-14 (NIV)

Evangeline

It's been a couple of weeks since Gabriel's birthday, and it's been a peaceful set of weeks. Throughout that time, not only have Gabriel and I had various sessions in the bedroom, but we've also had various sessions outside planning what we'll do once we leave Pinevale.

However, as quiet and content as it has been these past couple of weeks, I cannot help a deep nagging inside me that something's coming. I guess, more specifically, who.

Gabriel's father hasn't spoken to him or myself since his outburst in his office, is he prepping something, trying to create another contract to manipulate Gabriel, or has he simply backed off.

I place the last item in my suitcase before zipping it up and lifting it by the handle to take it downstairs.

I was off back to New York for the weekend for a friend's wedding; I wanted Gabriel to come to get away for another set of days and for us to feel free to act like a couple. However, it posed too much of a risk with someone asking questions and digging into a business that has no regard for them.

"Have you got everything, sweetheart?" My grandmother calls, sweeping back a tendril of hair behind my ear before resting her hand on my shoulder.

"It's a shame he can't go" " she says. I nod before picking up my cardigan on the rack and putting it on. Gabriel and I had to say our goodbyes earlier, as he had some home visits this morning and couldn't make it to the time I left.

"I know, but it's for the best, and soon we'll be able to parade ourselves around like nobody's business."

Before Gram's can reply, a loud car horn beeps from outside.

"That's the cab, Gram; Gabriel will be home around four, and don't forget that Margaret's 80th dinner is on Sunday" I pick up my suitcase and open up the front door.

"Oh, and don't forget you have an appointment for Monday morning. Gabriel's happy to take you and-"

"Evangeline, leave my house immediately; I've managed perfectly well on my own those years you went to college; I'll be perfectly fine for a weekend."

I lean down and peck her cheek before picking up my suitcase, and heading outside to the taxi, giving her a quick wave, before placing my suitcase in the back and getting into the backseat. I give her another quick wave before the car drives off, towards the airport.

Gabriel: Have a good trip, I love you.

Evangeline: I will! And I know!

I smile at my cheeky response.

Gabriel: ...

Evangeline: I love you toooo!

Gabriel: Good girl

My stomach erupts in a fit of butterflies at the praise. I don't instantly reply as heat rushes to my cheeks, and I crack open the car window; at the same time, my phone vibrates in my hand.

Gabriel: Was that too much?

Gabriel: It was in one of the books you left in the car.

Evangeline: no
