Cory sighed, turning back and beginning to hobble away once John B had gotten out of sight.
"Hey," JJ said, chasing after her. "You still got a bum foot, alright? So easy."
Cory sighed, looking back at him. She had tears spilling onto her cheeks.
"JJ," she said, dropping her head onto his chest.
He was shocked for a moment, then reached forward, cradling his arms around her.
"It's okay," he said as she began to sob into his chest. "It's alright."
Slowly, her arms moved up around him, holding him in the hug.
They stood there in comfortable silence for several minutes, until sirens began to approach them.
They pulled apart, and Cory looked in the direction of the sirens with furrowed brows.
JJ pushed her behind himself.
JJ glanced back at Kie and Pope, who seemed to have just finished kissing.
"Hey, guys," JJ interrupted. "Sorry to ruin the party, but we gotta go, right now, come on!"
They started forward, going for the car, but before they got more than two steps, the cop cars arrived, parking them in.
Kie immediately raised her hands.
Officers started climbing out of the cars.
The first–an SBI agent–loaded a gun, running at them.
"Move!" He ordered.
"Pope," Kie scolded.
Pope obliged, moving out of the man's way
"Hands up, hands up!" He ordered.
The others slowly raised their hands up.
"We're too late," Shoupe said. "He's gone. Goddammit! Bratcher, have your guys stand down. Let me talk to these kids." Shoupe moved in front of the pogues. "Alright, where the hell is he? Where the hell is he?" He looked to Jay first. "JJ, I see you're living up to your name. Pope, how about you? This isn't a fucking game! You can do the right thing right now, where'd he go?"
"Suspect has just left station 26 in a small boat," the SBI agent reported. "Need marine patrol to respond."Shoupe turned to Cory.
She slowly lowered her hands, stepping forward. Shoupe trained his gun on her.
"Listen, Shoupe," Cory said.
"Don't point that thing at her," JJ snapped.
"Jay," Cory said, holding a hand out. He backed down. "Shoupe, I... I was there. On the airstrip."
Shoupe furrowed his brows. "Ward didn't say anything about you being there."
"Ward was lying, Shoupe," Cory argued. "I was with John B. He–he didn't do it."
"Don't lie to me girl–"
"He didn't do it!" Cory yelled. "I swear to god, Shoupe, it wasn't John B."
"Then who was it?" Shoupe snapped back. "Who killed her?"
Cory gulped. "Rafe."
Shoupe immediately rolled his eyes. "Don't lie to me, Cory."
"I'm not lying!"
"We know he wasn't on the strip," Shoupe said. "He didn't go anywhere near that airstrip.""No, Shoupe," Cory said. "I swear to god it was Rafe! And then he–he kidnapped me because I was there, Shoupe, I swear–"
