We crept out of the dormitory, down the stairs, across the common room, and climbed through the portrait hole.

Fat Lady: Who's there?

We said nothing, and walked quickly down the corridor.

YN: Where should we go?

Harry stopped, turning to me.

Harry: The Restricted Section in the library.  Maybe we can figure out who Flamel is.

We set off, drawing the invisibility cloak tight around us as we walked.  The library was pitch black and very eerie.  Harry lit a lamp to see his way along the rows of books.  The lamp looked as if it was floating along in midair, and even though I knew Harry was holding it, the sight gave me the creeps.  The Restricted Section was right at the back of the library.  Stepping carefully over the rope that separated these books from the rest of the library, he held up his lamp to read the titles.  They didn't tell us much.  Their peeling, faded gold letters spelled words in languages I couldn't understand.  Some had no title at all.  One book had a dark stain on it that looked disturbingly like blood.  The hairs on the back of my neck prickled.  Maybe I was imagining it, but I swear faint whispering was coming from the books, like they knew someone was there who shouldn't be.  Harry set the lamp down carefully on the floor, and we looked along the bottom shelves for an interesting looking book.  Harry pulled a large black and silver volume out and, balancing it on his knee, reached to open it.  My eyes widened.  I recognized that book.  My mom had a copy of it.

YN: Harry, don't-

A piercing, bloodcurdling shriek split the silence.  The book was screaming.  Harry snapped it shut, but the shriek went on and on, one high, unbroken, earsplitting note.  He stumbled backward and knocked over his lamp, which went out at once.  Footsteps came thundering down the corridor outside.  I stuffed the shrieking book back on the shelf, and we ran for it.  We passed Filch in the doorway, his pale wild eyes looking straight through us, and we slipped under Filch's outstretched arm and streaked off up the corridor, the book's shrieks still ringing in our ears.  We came to a sudden halt in front of a tall suit of armor.  We had been so busy getting away from the library, we hadn't paid attention to where we were going.  Perhaps because it was dark, I didn't recognize where we were at all.  There was a suit of armor near the kitchens, but we had be five floors above there.

Filch: You asked me to come directly to you, Professor, if anyone was wandering around at night, and somebody's been in the Restricted Section.

I motioned at Harry to stay completely still.  Wherever we were, Filch must know a shortcut, because his soft, greasy voice was getting nearer, and to our horror, it was Snape who replied.

Snape: The Restricted Section?  Well, they can't be far, we'll catch them.

I stood completely still as Filch and Snape came around the corner ahead.  They couldn't see us, of course, but it was a narrow corridor and if they came much nearer they'd knock right into us.  The cloak didn't stop us from being solid.  We backed away as quietly as we could.  A door stood ajar to our left.  It was our only hope.  I nudged harry and pointed at the door.  We slowly approached it, squeezing through it while holding our breath, trying not to move it, and we managed to get inside the room without their noticing anything.  They walked straight past, and Harry leaned against the wall, breathing deeply, listening to their footsteps dying away.  I sighed, sitting cross legged on the floor.

Harry: That was too close.

I nodded, looking around the room.  It looked like an unused classroom.  The dark shapes of desks and chairs were piled against the walls, and there was an upturned trash bin.  But propped against the wall facing me was something that didn't look as if it belonged there, something that looked as if someone had just put it there to keep it out of the way.  It was a magnificent mirror, as high as the ceiling, with an ornate gold frame, standing on two clawed feet.  There was an inscription carved around the top.

YN: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi.  Someone clearly had a stroke while writing this.

My panic was fading now that there was no sound of Filch and Snape.  I walked towards the mirror, but couldn't see anything in it.  It was foggy and dark.  Then I stepped directly in front of it.  The person looking back at me was not me.  It was a man, probably in his early twenties.  He was about six foot three, and had stark white spiky hair, a black blindfold around his eyes, and was wearing a uniform of some kind.  He had a small smirk on his face.  There was also a pin on his collar that red "Auror: Satoru Gojo".  This was my grandfather.  I turned to harry, who was just staring at the mirror in awe.

Harry: That's... those are my parents.

I pulled my blindfold off, and the man in the mirror did the same.  He had the same shiny blue eyes as me.  Then I looked at the name of the mirror.  Maybe...

YN: The writing on the mirror.  It's backwards.

I pulled out my wand and began writing the letters in the reverse order in the air.  It read "Ishow no tyo urfac ebu tyo urhe arts desire".

Harry: That still doesn't make sense.

YN: You just need to move the spaces around.  Look.

I did, and the writing suddenly became clear.  "I show not your face but what your hearts desire".

Harry: So... this mirror shows us what we want most?

YN: No... I think it show us what would make us the happiest in life.

I turned back to the mirror, and it was different.  Now, it showed me, but I looked older, maybe around eighteen.  A blonde girl was standing next to me.  She was about eighteen as well, but I recognized her.  It was definitely Ava.  Both of us were smiling, and she was holding my hand and kissed me on the cheek.  I felt my face heat up, and I quickly turned back to Harry, who was still just staring at the mirror.

YN: We uh... we should go.  Filch and Snape will probably come back this way eventually.

Harry: You're right.

The next night, we came back, this time joined by Ron and Ava.  I had invited her, because I was curious to see what she'd see... especially after what I saw last night.  Ron had already gone, and he had seen himself as Quidditch captain holding the house cup, and now Ava was standing in front of it.  Her face turned bright red.

Ava: I-its me... I'm being given top marks in all of my classes.  Yes, that's it.

Harry: Are you sure?  Your face is all red.

She glanced at me, before shaking her head.

Ava: Yes, that's all.

I smiled a bit, but a sudden noise outside in the corridor put a quick end to the discussion.  We hadn't realized how loudly we had been talking.

Ron: Quick!

Ron threw the cloak back over us as the luminous eyes of Mrs. Norris came through the door.  The four of us stood completely still.  Did the cloak work on cats?  After what seemed an age, she turned and left.

YN: She might have gone for Filch, I bet she heard us.  Come on.

The four of us hurried out of the room.  When we got back to the common room, Ava hugged me and went up to bed.  Harry, Ron, and I quickly went up to our own room.

Ron: YN, you're grinning like an idiot.

YN: Shut up, Ron.
