A Close Call

I sat up quickly as I heard a scream.  I flung my curtains to the side to see Ron sitting up in bed, the hangings torn from one side, a look of utmost terror on his face.

Ron: Black!  Sirius Black!  With a knife!

Harry: What?

Ron: Here!  Just now!  Slashed the curtains!  Woke me up!

Dean: You sure you weren't dreaming, Ron?

Ron: Look at the curtains!  I tell you, he was here!

We all scrambled out of bed.  I reached the dormitory door first, and we sprinted back down the staircase.  The common room was lit with the glow of the dying fire, still littered with the debris from the party.  It was deserted.

YN: Ron.  Are you absolutely positive you weren't dreaming?

Ron: I'm telling you, I saw him!

Ava: Guys, Professor McGonagall told us to go to bed!

A few of the girls, including Ava, had come down their staircase, pulling on dressing gowns and yawning.  Boys, too, were reappearing.

Fred: Excellent, are we carrying on?

Percy: Everyone back upstairs!

Percy had hurried into the common room and was pinning his Head Boy badge to his pajamas as he spoke.

Ron: Perce, Sirius Black!  In our dormitory!  With a knife!  Woke me up!

The common room went very still.

Percy: Nonsense!  You had too much to eat, Ron, had a nightmare-

Ron: I'm telling you-

McGonagall: Now, really, enough's enough!

She was back.  She slammed the portrait behind her as she entered the common room and stared furiously around.

McGonagall: I am delighted that Gryffindor won the match, but this is getting ridiculous!  Percy, I expected better of you!

Percy: I certainly didn't authorize this, Professor!  I was just telling them all to get back to bed!  My brother Ron here had a nightmare-

Ron: IT WASN'T A NIGHTMARE!  Professor, I woke up and Sirius Black was standing over me, holding a knife!

She just stared at him.

McGonagall: Don't be ridiculous, Weasley, how could he possibly have gotten through the portrait hole?

Ron: Ask him!

He pointed a shaking finger at the back of Sir Cadogan's picture.

Ron: Ask him if he saw...

Glaring suspiciously at Ron, Professor McGonagall pushed the portrait back open and went outside.  The whole common room listened with bated breath.  Ava ran over and hugged me, shaking.  I wrapped my arms around her, patting her head to calm her down.

McGonagall: Sir Cadogan, did you just let a man enter Gryffindor Tower?

Sir Cadogan: Certainly, good lady!

There was a stunned silence, both inside and outside the common room.

McGonagall: You... you did?  But the password!

Sir Cadogan: He had 'em!  Had the whole week's, my lady!  Read 'em off a little piece of paper!

Professor McGonagall pulled herself back through the portrait hole to face the stunned crowd.  She was white as chalk.
