The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a warm golden hue over the family home. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Sunoo paced the living room, his heart racing as he glanced at the clock. Heeseung sat on the couch, his fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. They had decided it was time to confront their parents, to lay bare the truth that had been festering in the shadows for far too long.
“Are you sure about this?” Heeseung asked, his voice barely above a whisper
Sunoo stopped pacing and turned to him, his eyes filled with determination. “We can’t keep hiding. They need to know how we feel. It’s not wrong to love each other.”
“I am afraid they will never accept us. But hiding it will make it worse.” Heeseung agreed with Sunoo. It would be better to confess as Sunoo made him promise. He thought about it a lot. He didn’t want to tell their parents about Sunoo’s feelings because he didn’t want Sunoo to go through the same thing he faced. Sunoo is not like Heeseung. It will be difficult for him to overcome everything. But hiding things from their parents made it even worse. Now when Sunoo himself wanted to confess. Heeseung will support him. This is the best way to overcome this hard time. It was not like he wanted their parents to accept them right away but at least they can try to make their parents understand their feelings.
Sunoo nodded, though doubt flickered in his eyes. They had both suffered under the weight of their parent’s disapproval, and the scars of Heeseung’s past attempts to escape the pain still haunted them. But this time, they would stand together.
As the clock struck six, their parents entered the room, laughter echoing from the kitchen. The sound faded as they noticed the serious expressions on their sons’ faces.
“Is everything okay?” Mrs. Lee asked, concern etching her features.
Heeseung took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. “Mom, Dad, we need to talk.”
Mr. Lee raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms. “What’s going on?”
Sunoo stood up, his voice trembling but resolute. “It’s about us… about our feelings.”
Their parents exchanged glances, confusion clouding their expressions. “What do you mean?” Mrs. Lee asked, her brow furrowing.
Heeseung stepped forward, his voice steady despite the storm of emotions swirling within him. “I love Sunoo. I have for a long time. And… Sunoo loves me too.”
Silence enveloped the room, thick and suffocating. Their parents’ faces shifted from confusion to disbelief, and then to anger.
“This is ridiculous!” Mr. Lee shouted, his voice booming. “You’re brothers! This is wrong!”
Heeseung’s heart sank, but he pressed on. “We’re not blood-related. We’re stepbrothers, and our love is real. It’s not wrong to feel this way.”
Mrs. Lee’s eyes filled with tears, her voice trembling. “Heeseung, you don’t understand. This isn’t how families work. You can’t—”
“Can’t what?” Heeseung interrupted, his voice rising. “Can’t love? Can’t be happy? You never understood me! You never cared about my feelings!”
Sunoo stepped closer to Heeseung, his hand finding his. “We’ve both suffered because of this. Heeseung Hyung almost lost everything because of your rejection. We’re asking you to see us, to understand us.”
Mr. Lee’s face turned red with anger. “You think this is love? This is a phase! You’re confused!”
“No!” Heeseung shouted, tears streaming down his face. “I’m not confused! I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life!”
The room fell silent again, the weight of their words hanging heavily in the air. Mrs. Lee wiped her tears, her expression softening as she looked at her sons. “But… what about the future? What will people say?”
Sunoo squeezed Heeseung’s hand tighter, his voice steady. “We don’t care what people say. We just want to be true to ourselves. We want your support, not your judgment.”
Mr. Lee’s expression shifted, the anger slowly giving way to uncertainty. “You really mean this?”
“Yes,” Heeseung replied, his voice breaking. “We love each other. Please try to understand.”
For a moment, the room was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Then, Mrs. Lee stepped forward, her eyes searching their faces. “I… I don’t know if I can accept this right away. It’s a lot to process.”
Heeseung’s heart sank, but he nodded, understanding the weight of their request. “We just want you to try. We want to be a family, all of us.”
Mr. Lee sighed, running a hand through his hair. “This isn’t what I envisioned for you two. But… I can see how much you care for each other. I just need time.”
Sunoo’s grip on Heeseung’s hand tightened, a flicker of hope igniting in their hearts. “That’s all we ask for. Time to show you that our love is real.”
As their parents exchanged glances, the tension in the room began to dissipate, replaced by a fragile understanding. It wouldn’t be easy, but for the first time, they were willing to listen.
Heeseung and Sunoo stood together, their hearts intertwined, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. They had taken the first step toward acceptance, and together, they would navigate the uncharted waters of love and family.
