Am I really that unsightly that this man just cursed at me the second he saw me? Well screw him. He ain't that much of a looker himself. So early in the morning and this person is already pissing me off.
"So you requested a check up because of tooth pain, is that right?"
Although I was pissed, I just can't really kick this person out as that would be quite unprofessional of me to do and would probably drag the name of the clinic down. Just gotta suck it up for now then.
"Yes, it had been so for roughly two weeks."
He looked like a dog who got kicked out in the rain. His expression didn't particularly look cocky after cursing at me but rather very sorry. Is he actually feeling sorry after what he just said? Why do it in the first place then? What a twisted man.
"Your records here from your previous dentist says you have sensitive teeth. However it says here that you've been taking care of your teeth very well. Mind telling me the changes you have made in the last 10 months?"
He raised his head and started thinking hard. I could hear the gears in his head turning.
"Now that I think about it, I stopped smoking."
He proudly said so while smiling idiotically like a big dog.
"And?"
"And?" His confused look made me want to kick him in the face. Why the heck does he look like my neighbor's golden lab? Is it because of his brown hair? his big build? Or is it the fact that he's smiling so much after telling me he stopped smoking?
"You not smoking should've brought in opposite results, but here you are in front of me with a toothache. Are there any other changes you've made?"
"Ahh, since I've stopped smoking, I've been eating lollipops instead to keep my mouth busy. But don't get me wrong, I didn't smoke every day back then. More like twice a week at most."
I wasn't even asking, why so defensive?
"I see. Well then, shall we have a check? Please make yourself comfortable over there and lie yourself down."
I stood up to wear my mask, cap and gloves then approached the chair where he was lying down, quite nervously. I could tell, since he was fidgeting around so much. Plus he was sweating a bit even though we were in an air-conditioned room.
"Are you nervous?" I asked just to make it seem like I care.
He seemed to like it though and relaxed a bit.
"It's been awhile since I went to the dentist so I guess so, but doctor---have we met before?"
He looked so serious that it took me by surprise and made me tilt my head. Apparently, I do this a lot when I get confused says my family and coworkers.
"I don't recall meeting someone like you. I'd definitely remember if that was the case."
"Because I'm good looking?" he smiled rather smugly at me.
This idiot. I'd definitely remember someone who'd curse at me at first sight, wouldn't anyone?
"Sure, sure whatever floats your boat. Okay, open wide and let's start."
The hole on his 2nd molar was enough evidence to diagnose that this was an obvious case of Class I caries.
"You have a hole on one of your posterior teeth. It would seem that you would need a filling to close it and to avoid any food and other bacteria to enter it. Would you want to have it today or just settle for a checkup and cleaning for now?"
"Is that so? Then I'll be having the treatment today, doc."
"Very well, just pay the additional fees at the receptionist when we finish."
After the treatment I sat him down to give him an overview of his case and as to what might have caused it alongside some consultation.
"You should tone it down with the sweets. You have a rather weak enamel that is easily prone to tooth decay. Plus, since you have started eating sweets, I could only assume that you've been brushing your teeth more aggressively these days."
"Wow doc, how did you know? I thought by doing so it would help me clean them better since I eat sweets these days."
"They actually cause more damage than good. Be gentle when you brush your teeth. Aggressive brushing would just result in enamel wear down and your gums receding earlier. Plus your gums are too red to be considered normal."
As I was jotting down on his chart, I took a quick glance at him to see why he suddenly became quiet. The look he was giving me was enough to tear me to shreds. The micro movements on his face told me that he was thinking of something that may or may not be possible.
What the heck could he be thinking right now? He isn't cursing me in his head is he?
I'm usually not this cranky. I'm probably like this since the patient I was supposed to meet today was sick---and couldn't bring me her usual thank you gift which was a chocolate frappe drink. She usually gives it to me as an extra token of appreciation for my service.
And I was sooo looking forward to that drink.
"Doc?" he tapped on the table with a worried face.
I must have been so hung up about that drink that I forgot he was still here.
"Sorry, I guess that will be all. Please stop by the receptionist for the payment and if you have any other questions feel free to ask him."
"Wait, are you sure we never met before?"
"For the last time Mr. Kim, I'm afraid I've never met you personally before."
"Really? You just seem so familiar to me."
"Hmm, really? Well feel free to make an appointment if there are any other problems."
A smile broke across his face and he immediately leaned in closer to my desk facing me straight on with a dumb expression.
"So, can I drop by and visit you to hang out?"
"Wait I didn----"
Ringggg~~~
"Hold that thought for a moment doc, let me just take this call."
And he just had to have a call right now. What perfect timing.
After a few minutes he put down his phone and faced me again with a dejected face.
"I'm so sorry doc to cut you off earlier, but I just received a call and really need to be going now. I'll be seeing you soon then. Take care."
He left cheerfully before I could even say a peep.
"Then again I doubt that fool would be dumb enough to actually come here and waste both of our time."
Well damn, was I wrong.
