My stomach was getting all twisted inside. I stood there, face to face against him, waiting for an answer. But all I got was a head tilt to the side and a very confused expression.
I may or may not have pushed it a little too far.
"Ahhh...well, I guess since college? I don't really know when exactly."
He looked down on my hands that were still gripping tight on the armrests of his chair.
"Could you please let go now?"
I quickly removed my hands and laughed nervously trying to lessen the awkward tension in the air.
"You seriously don't have to go that near just to talk to me. I'm just a bit blind not deaf."
"Sorry, Dr. Jeon."
I took a quick glance at him who was typing away on his computer. He seemed unfrazzled about what I just did. Though it was me who initiated the act, I was very much nervous doing it.
Should I try it now? What if he doesn't answer?
"Wonwoo?"
"Hmm?"
"Wonwoo?"
"Yes?"
"Wonwoo?"
"I told you I'm not deaf, what is it?"
His face looked a bit irritated, but I didn't even mind since I was too happy by the fact that he answered me when I called him 'Wonwoo'.
"What are you smiling for?"
"Nothing. I found it nice that you responded to me."
"You were calling my name, what did you expect?"
He doesn't seem to realize how it mattered so much to me.
"You're one weird guy Sir Kim."
"Mingyu."
"Pardon?"
I wanted us to get close. Even if It takes a long time, I'm willing to wait for him to open up to me.
"Just call me Mingyu. You seriously don't need to address me so formally. I assume we're about the same age."
"I'm actually younger than you."
"Huh? What makes you so sure?"
"Your records."
The smile he gave me was mischievous. But it was the first smile he showed me that didn't seem like the "service" type of smile that professionals usually give to their patients.
That smile was definitely a trap.
"Hahaha...didn't think about that. I just assumed that we were the same age."
"Do I look that old?"
"No! That wasn't what I was trying to say---wait...so you think I'm old? I bet the gap isn't even that much."
This conversation that we were having reminded me of how friends usually bicker with one another. This is a huge step-up to the usual talks we have that mostly consists of me talking in paragraphs and him answering in nods or few-worded answers.
"Yeah 2 years is nothing. Don't worry I didn't think of you as old. You seem too energetic for that word."
He looked back at his screen, grinning. He seemed happy that he got to tease me. I'm just glad that I get to see him smiling.
"Wonwoo."
"Yeah?"
He was still busy with encoding records on his computer.
"When we're alone, you can just relax and smile as much as you want. No need to be all cool 24/7."
The clicking of his keyboard stopped and he faced towards my direction.
"So you think I'm cool?" he said while grinning smugly.
There's that smile again. I shouldn't have told him that. Now he looks even more handsome. I cleared my throat and tried to sound as calm and collected.
"Don't be too full of yourself there buddy."
"I was just kidding. Thanks for the consoling words Mingyu."
His smile this time was different. It was warm and genuine. It made me all fuzzy inside.
"You're welcome Wonwoo. I better get going now. See you next time."
I left the clinic happy. It felt like I was finally starting to know him and that he was finally opening up to me.
"Time to work the night shift."
