"How dare you."
"Before you lash out at me, I have some gifts for you."
"Gifts? Gifts??" You think I won't whoop your ass just because you brought me souvenirs? Are you crazy, Jeon Wonwoo?"
A month. I was told to rest for a month, and here I was, showing myself at the clinic right after arriving from my vacation with Mingyu. I carried a bag of plushies and sweets for my ill-tempered receptionist. The same one who I knew was going to throw a fit, and had honestly promised he would, the moment I even stepped foot in here before those thirty days ended.
"Seungkwan, for the love of God, calm down. I didn't even come here to work. I just wanted to drop these for you," I said, reaching out the bag toward him like he was some rabid animal I was offering a piece of meat to. The crazy look in his eyes was very similar to ones I'd seen on National Geographic. Plus, the flaring nostrils made it hard to believe he wasn't capable of biting my head off.
He takes the bag nonetheless, brows raised like they always are whenever he hasn't fully bought the excuses I'm making. He quickly scans what's inside before looking back toward me, his eyes finally softening, returning to that somewhat sane man he presents himself as to the patients.
"So," Seungkwan asks casually, like he hadn't threatened me earlier with a sharp scaler, eyes still red. "How was your trip?"
I just act like I'm not scared out of my wits and go to sit down, reminiscing about my time with Mingyu. The said man back at the candy store, handling work that had probably piled up in his absence.
"It was fun. I stayed near a beach. I biked around, made some sandcastles, even ate snacks late at night back at the resort. There was a lot of good food around the area, and I never really ran out of things to do."
Thinking back, after the day we went shopping for plushies, everything just went by in a blur. I was enjoying myself too much. I was sure I'd said it to myself, over and over in my head, that I never wanted to leave. The idea of staying in that place with Mingyu became my new dream in life, now that I'd had a taste of it.
"It sure does look like it. Judging from that wide grin on your face. So, did you go alone, or did you bring someone else?"
Seungkwan doesn't know yet about Mingyu and me dating. As much as I trust him with the important stuff in the clinic and, well, most things in my life, something about him knowing about my love life just feels oddly scary. Like admitting you have your first boyfriend to your mom. Yeah. That's exactly how I'd put it.
"Uh... yeah, I came there with Mingyu. He said he knew the perfect place to unwind, and told me he needed a break anyway."
I lied—not because I was ashamed of Mingyu, but merely because I wasn't mentally prepared for the bombardment of questions I was sure I'd face when I told him the truth.
He nods, sighing loudly like he believes me. Then he scoffs, bursting into laughter the next second, making me lean back, confused as to why the hell he was suddenly laughing out of nowhere.
"Oh God, Wonwoo, you really suck at lying, don't you?" he says, wiping the tears from the corners of his eyes. His shoulders are still shaking as he looks at me, his smile never leaving, like my face is the funniest thing he's ever seen.
"What are you talking about?" I ask, nerves already eating at me, that looming sense of doom making me gulp.
"You and him going on a trip together, alone, in a romantic resort for one week?" He clicks his tongue. "Damn. I never knew Mingyu was that fast."
His words made it sound like he knew more than what I'd just told him. Like a cover had been blown before I could even lay it out to protect myself.
"What do you mean by that?"
