It happened all too fast.
I was walking down the street after a good old meal of tteokbokki when, just as I was about to turn another corner, I heard a small meow from somewhere nearby. I whipped my head around, searching for where it could have come from, until my eyes landed on a tiny kitten by the curb.
Dread punched me in the face as I locked eyes with it—the cars zooming past behind it, seemingly oblivious to the small furball sitting right near their wheels.
Without much thought, I ran toward it, scooping it up in my hands and cradling it close to comfort the poor little thing. Its paws reached for my face, kneading at the air in those tiny biscuit-making motions kittens do when they're trying to cling to something.
Time slowed for me as I admired its yellow-green eyes. Unfortunately, it didn't slow for the rest of the world.
Crash.
"Hey—someone just got hit!"
"Someone call an ambulance! This guy needs help!"
"Call 911 hurry!"
"Where is he?!"
I can hear his voice calling out for me. He sounds so worried. How could he not be, when I'm in this state?
"He's right over here. He's been out of it since earlier. We couldn't call you through his phone since it died, but he managed to tell us your number before he went out."
My eyes are still closed. Even if I wanted to open them, I can't really control my body—my entire system failing me over one decision I made that day.
"Goodness, Mingyu..."
Now he sounds exhausted, ragged breaths leaving him as he probably stands right next to my body, looking down at me. In that moment, I really want to move—to tell him I'm okay, to tell him thank you for caring so much about me, for running this quickly to my side.
"You're saying he's been like this since when?"
"I'd say about three hours."
He sighs.
And I start to sweat.
Not because it's hot—but because I recognize that familiar way he just sighed.
Not tired.
Just
full
blown
pissed.
"Get the fuck up, Kim Mingyu."
