Chapter 16:

Emily "what are you even saying", JJ "would you just listen to me and stop talking over me", Emily "okay, I'm sorry", JJ "she has nowhere to go Emily, her parents are drug addicts and all they are gonna do is abuse her and make her suffer more trauma", Emily "that's four kids JJ, you don't think that's a lot to handle", JJ "babe please, I don't think that this little girl deserves the abuse she's going through, Emily please, we gave Emerson a second chance, she deserves one too", Emily "you don't think this is gonna be a lot for us to manage, four kids and full time FBI agents", JJ "babe I know that we can do it, we're in this together, I don't want that poor girl to go back home and just suffer more, she's suffering and doesn't deserve any of it", Emily "are you sure this is even gonna work", JJ "I spoke with our social worker already, we're already registered foster parents, same process as Emerson's, maybe even quicker this time since we already done it before", Emily "okay fine. I'm on board with it. What are we gonna do with the whole room situation", JJ "Emily we still have an extra room, we literally just moved into that house together", Emily "I know. I'll work on it, maybe have Henry help me", JJ "why isn't he at school", Emily "fever, and a sore throat. Wasn't sending him to school", JJ "okay. I'll keep you updated and let you know when it's time for us to leave", Emily "okay". JJ returned to the hospital room, and her along with the social worker talked with Averie. Averie "why are you doing this for me"? JJ "because me and my partner want to", Averie "I'm just gonna be a burden to you", JJ "you're not gonna be a burden to us, you're gonna be apart of our family. It's something that you deserve". JJ laid in the hospital bed next to her, every few minutes the doctor came to check in, the substance that entered her body was slowly disappearing and leaving her body, it was that, that they were waiting for before discharging her. Luke "how long have you been here", JJ "all night, this morning", Luke "don't you have to get home", JJ "not until I can take her home", Luke "you and Emily are adopting her", JJ "yeah, it took me a bit of convincing. But yeah we are adopting her", Luke "that's great", JJ "yeah".

JJ looked at her phone to see the picture that was just sent from Emily. JJ "hey baby", Emily "hey, did you get the picture", JJ "yeah, I did. How did the two of you manage to get that done so quickly", Emily "we were pretty much just in the zone", JJ "it looks amazing", Emily "any update on when you can leave the hospital with her", JJ "the doctor is waiting for the substance to leave her body. It's pretty much almost gone but she'll have to take antibiotics", Emily "oh yeah, bought Henry the new phone, and got one for all of them but gonna wait until you get back home to surprise them", JJ "you got how many", Emily "four, I didn't forget about Averie. I got Henry the newest one, and then I got Michael his, Emerson hers and one for Averie", JJ "I don't even wanna know how much money you spent", Emily "you really don't wanna know lol", JJ "okay, so the doctor just gave me her antibiotics, and now we are waiting on the discharge paperwork and we should be there soon", Emily "okay, better hurry. Really wanna kiss those beautiful lips of yours", JJ "I wanna kiss you too. We're leaving now", Emily "okay. See you soon", JJ "okay". Averie "are you sure that you and Emily wanna adopt me, I'm literally a lost cause", JJ "what, why would you even say something like that sweetheart, your a child and you deserve to be child and to be loved, and to grow up knowing that you're loved. Some children don't get the opportunity to find their forever home, to find a couple and a family that could forever be there for them. We wanna do that for you, and I get it, you've suffered a lot, you have ptsd, you have mental health issues but that doesn't matter, that doesn't change the fact that we want you to be apart of our family. Healing will take as long as you need, there's no time span for how much time you need to take to heal, you heal and recover on your own, we will be there for you the entire journey no matter what. If you need to talk to us, we're here to listen, not to ever judge you, we actually bought you and all of our kids this journal, and we want you all to be able to write down what you're feeling or thinking, if you're having a bad day or a good day we want you to express in the journal", Averie "you really want to be there for me", JJ "we both do my love, we really do", Averie "woah, is this your house? It's so beautiful", JJ "thank you, I think you're gonna love your room, my girlfriend and our oldest son designed it for you", Averie "I have my own room", JJ "yes", JJ honked the horn indicating that she was home. JJ "come on", Averie got out of the car and was a bit shy, but she took JJ's hand and they walked up to the door, Emily opened it. JJ "so this is my girlfriend Emily, Henry our oldest son, Michael and Emerson. And this is Averie", Averie waved but she was still a bit shy and nervous. Henry "do you wanna see your room", Averie "okay", Henry held his hand out, JJ "go with him, he's gonna show you your room, me and Emily are gonna get the table set up for dinner", Averie went with Henry and he showed her to her new room. JJ "you okay", Emily "yeah, never did I think I was even capable of being a mother, I didn't think with the job that we have that being parents isn't good because of the danger we can be put in", JJ "but here we are, together. Actually doing it", Emily "I know. You know I fell in love with you the moment I laid eyes on you, all of you. Just doing this with you seems like a dream come true", JJ "I love you", Emily "I love you too", JJ "so before the night ends I think we should have a little chat with her, from what I know there was a lot of drugs around her and she's felt a lot of neglect and she's got deep anxiety so I feel like throughout the day it's a must that we talk to her and just see how she feels by the end of the day", Emily "do you think that will help her", JJ "honestly it's worth a try. She's not gonna feel loved if we don't show her and tell her that she's loved by us", Emily "makes sense", before the day ended Emily cooked dinner, and after they had dinner, it was bath time. Henry showered by himself, just dealt with both girls this time around and Emily dealt with Michael. JJ "once your done getting dressed for bed, we want to talk to in our room", Averie "am I in trouble", JJ "no baby, we just wanna see how it's going for you being here", Averie "okay", JJ checked on the kids, they were in their rooms, watching tv, Averie went to Emily and JJ's room. Emily shut the door, JJ "you're not in any sort of trouble baby girl, we just wanna know how you're feeling right now. Being here with us, from what I was told about your past and things that happened in your life, it hasn't been easy for you and you've never really had somewhere to call home, because the place that you thought was home was filled with drug abuse and abuse that honestly destroyed you. And I'm not trying to drop anything on you, and I know the last thing you want is to talk about what happened to you, to talk about any of it, and you don't ever have to tell us if that's not comfortable for you, because we will understand. You don't have to feel like you're some sort of shell right now, you don't wanna talk about it, that's fine. But this right here, this journal you can write whatever you want in this, will we see it, no. This is just for you, if you ever want to share it with us, then you are more than welcome to", Averie "it does feel more safe, Henry and the others are really nice to me. He's a good big brother", JJ "he is isn't he, how are you feeling about going school", Averie "I don't know", JJ "you are aware that you have to go to school right, Henry does, Michael goes and so does Emerson. It's not gonna be easy but you've got to try to give yourself some leverage and time to grow", Averie "do I get to go to school with them", JJ "yes with Emerson and Michael, and Henry's school is right across from your school", Averie "can you both bring me to school for the first day", JJ "of course", Averie "can I go to bed now I'm tired", JJ "sure, goodnight honey", Averie "goodnight", Emily "that went well considering I had nothing to say lol", JJ "don't be so hard on yourself just because you didn't say anything. It's alright love", the two of them went to bed. Morning came, JJ and Emily dropped Henry off at school first and then took the littles to school, Averie got super nervous, so nervous she cried and held onto JJ for dear life, JJ took her outside of the classroom for a minute and had her took a few deep breaths. JJ "you're okay honey, just breathe, just breathe honey", Averie "I'm scared", JJ "I know and that's okay, but when school is finished Henry is gonna pick you all up and then you'll go home and wait for me and Emily to get back from work", Averie "why can't you stay", JJ "babe I really wish that I could stay, I really wish that we could but we can't. We gotta go to work", Averie cried into JJ's shoulder, JJ "this is not going well", Emily "I can see that", JJ "honey I really need you to be brave for us, and take a lot of deep breaths, so you can make it through the day", Emily "babe we really gotta get going, we have to get to work", JJ "baby girl, we have to go", Averie toughened up and stopped crying, she went into class and said bye to JJ and Emily. Emily and JJ headed to work, but they didn't stay in work, they had no cases so they instructed three days off.
Back at home,
Emily "you're giving me the look again", JJ "what look".

Emily "the look", JJ "I'm worried about our daughter, the meltdown she had today at school was not normal, not normal at all. Like she really broke down, and clinged onto me. I'm worried that this is gonna be an occurring issue", Emily "do you wanna talk to her about what happened", JJ "no because I don't want it to be some sort of trigger and it ends up happening again. I'm just worried, this just makes me nervous about sending her to school. What's gonna happen if we can't send her to school because of this issue", Emily "then we will find a way where the both of us can work from home and work at headquarters while doing homeschooling with them. We will do whatever it takes", JJ "okay", the two of them hugged it out. Once the kids got back from the school, it was one of those days where neither one of them wanted to cook so they ordered pizza for dinner. Once dinner was finished, they showered, got ready to the next day of school and work, and then headed to bed, calling it a night.
