Vira's POV
"She likes to break other people's property."
What the fuck? My head spun round to face Shubman, who had a fat smirk plastered on his face, evidently amused by my reaction. Abhishek was also completely bewildered, his mouth hanging wide open, seemingly surprised that his friend could say such a thing. Priya was glaring at Shubman, looking almost ready to throw hands. Her fists clenched at her sides, her glare practically drilling holes into Shubman’s skull.
"What the fuck are you talking about?" I demanded, my voice louder than I intended. The smirk didn’t leave his face, but his eyes sharpened.
"Your little stunt with my bat," he said coolly, crossing his arms as if he was recounting something as trivial as the weather. "Remember that?"
I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks, not from embarrassment but from sheer frustration. He was really doing this—bringing up something so random, so petty, in front of everyone. My eyes darted over to Priya, who was mouthing something like ignore him, but it was impossible to ignore the smug look Shubman was giving me.
"You think you're funny, don’t you?" I shot back, trying to steady my voice. "I didn’t even—"
"Didn’t you?" he interrupted, raising an eyebrow. "Come on, Vira. You have this habit, you know. Breaking things. Especially when they don’t belong to you."
His words hung in the air, thick with implication. He wasn't just talking about the bat anymore. There was a deeper accusation laced in there, one that made my skin crawl.
I took a step forward, my voice trembling with anger. "What’s your problem, Shubman? What did I ever do to you? Or Ishan, for that matter?"
He shrugged, still wearing that damn smirk. "Maybe it's not about what you did to me. Maybe it's about what you're still doing."
I blinked, taken aback. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
Shubman leaned in slightly, his voice lowering just enough for it to feel like a personal attack. "You don’t belong here, Vira. You think you do, but you don’t. You're playing pretend, in a world that’s not yours. You're just a—"
"Shubman!" Priya snapped, stepping forward before he could finish that sentence, her face flushed with anger. "That’s enough."
But he wasn’t done. "No, let’s be real for a second, Priya. She’s pretending like she’s part of this life. She’s hanging out with us, acting like she fits in with Ishan, with me—like she’s one of us. But she’s not."
His words struck like a punch to the gut, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I wasn’t even sure what to say. It was so sudden, so cruel, and yet, it felt like he’d been holding this in for a while.
Abhishek finally found his voice, stepping forward to break the tension. "Shubman, chill, yaar. What’s gotten into you?"
At least someone spoke up for me, I thought spitefully, resisting the urge to roll my eyes.
But Shubman just laughed, shaking his head. "I'm just telling the truth. Someone had to say it."
I looked at him, my heart pounding in my chest, my mind scrambling for a comeback, anything to wipe that smug look off his face. But the words wouldn’t come. He was right in a way—at least about the fact that I didn’t fit into their world. But that didn’t give him the right to throw it in my face like this.
And then, as if to twist the knife, he added, "I’m surprised Ishan hasn’t seen through it yet."
That was the final straw.
I couldn’t stand it anymore. I grabbed my bag from the couch, my movements jerky and rushed, and turned to Priya. "Bye."
Priya immediately nodded, her eyes filled with concern. "I’ll come with you—"
"No," I cut her off, glancing briefly at Abhishek, who looked beyond uncomfortable now. "Stay. Enjoy your evening."
Before she could protest, I was already halfway to the door, my heart pounding in my chest, my mind a chaotic mess. Shubman’s words echoed in my ears, his smug face burned into my memory.
I had no clue where I was going, but I needed to get away. Away from here. Away from him.
