I am not sure if I am insane or not right in the head. Who would give up their ultimate career of a secretary, working for the big dogs at L.A.W to a little merc company that no one ever heard of?

That one is called Monkeywrench. Who came up with that name? Anyhow the real reason for this change of heart was...well actually a heart situation. The minute that squid guy came in the office to demand his papers to quit his position as a L.A.W enforcement. We got onto a conversation over his next career choice and that is where I heard of his idea to become a mercenary. He offered me to join him as it only contains two people at the time while leaving his number on my desk. In three months I decided to take on the offer. But why you ask? Simple, if many people you call friends and family try to put you down for all sorts of stuff it is normal to rebel at some point. I had everything anyone wanted and still they had things to complain about and this time...it was about my love life. I was in a relationship with a L.A.W officer but it did not last long as it turned into a distant relationship. That is not what I wanted.

One day at the bar my friends asked me what a vampire bat like myself would be interested in. I knew they meant a love interest. But no matter whom I tried to think of, that image of Shrike Sanchez came into mind. That squid boy seems to be on my mind for a long time. Despite my friends complains that this was a red flag guy I decided to push my luck and give the career as a mercenary a shot. Not only that I made it into a bet. I swore to my friends if I do not get to tell him how I feel in three weeks and get his love in return, I will return to my old life. In the meantime I have to keep in touch of the progress. They grinned at me. No one expected this to happen especially not from me that would hardly dare to take risks. You can imagine how my friends looked at me as I stepped inside Shrikes ship.

I was welcomed with open arms by him and his partner Bulldog Browns. Shrike gave me a tour of the ship and where I can leave my stuff. That we would share a room and even the bed was not what I expected. But I made the best of this situation.

For the first week I tried to make myself useful by helping Beebs fixing the ship. With my large ears I could hear damages a mile off that is if it makes a sound to begin with. On other days I cooked for them both despite the room had no artificial gravity. It was not easy to make soups in this condition...or pizza as Shrike wanted. All in all to get some good contact with the squid boy was my main goal. However whenever I went to bed him always stayed away or when I wanted to watch a cartoon he watched it elsewhere. It got worse as I tried to get into a conversation with him as he was driving the ship. How did it go? They were short and simple answers, one way conversation from my side.

Still...I won't give up.

On the second week I tried my best to keep Shrike awake at all costs. That way he had no choice but to go to bed. I followed him to the room as he looked back at me, "Where are you going?"

I pointed at the room, "sleeping."

"But I am going to bed"

"So am I"

He kept blinking in confusion until his voice sounded unsure, "But where will you sleep?"

"With you...on the bed" the way I looked at him didn't make it any easier. It was purely innocent from my side but for Shrike it was another story. As a result that squid boy pressed himself against the wall as I took the space beside him on the bed. Until...

Brrrrrr

...my phone was vibrating.

Leaving the room in hurry I picked up, "This better be good".

I could hear my friends gather around one phone to ask me how it goes. Biting my lip I realised that my efforts so far didn't get me in the right direction. In the distance I picked up a few comments on Shrike's appearance and how this is set to fail for me. Annoyed I barked into the phone, "You have no idea how difficult it is to tell someone how you feel! I don't remember anyone of you making this step with a guy!"

Instead of answering one asked me about squid boy's character.

Looking towards the ceiling I leaned against the wall, "Character? Well he is...nice?...kind? ..."

"That's it!?" was the reply.

"I didn't have time to get to know him yet!"

"You been there for almost two weeks and that is all you can say about that guy?"

Biting my lip a little harder I realized how pathetic it sounds...and I couldn't blame my friends for that. From the other line one of my besties said, "Just tell him that you like him."

Simple right?

I sighted loudly before getting all dramatic, "Oh sure. Why didn't I think of that? I suppose I just waltz up to Shrike and say, I want to be your girlfriend because I have a massive crush on you..." lost in this I turned around while staying dramatic, "...marry me why don't you?!"

Silence filled the air...at least from my side.

"A little overkill but sounds good" said my friend on the other line.

While Shrike stood before me with wide eyes and his jaw dropped.

Slowly I held up my phone to my mouth, "...I will call you back..." CLICK. The squid boy stood there for a few minute till the word 'what?' left his lips. I backed off a little waving my hands, "no, no you misunderstood. This was...uhm...for ...a play...yes a play".

"...You said my name" said Shrike pointing at me, his eyes still wide in disbelief.

"Sike...I said Sike...."

"No..." said someone else on the other side of the room. Turning around I saw Beebs with the same expression as Shrike saying, "You definitely said Shrike."

A nuts!

There was no way out of this. I had no chance against them both, they heard it all. At the end it wasn't me gaining Shrikes attention but a certain squid boy with a massive goofy smile following me around wherever I go. Thank heavens they don't have a facility. That would have been creepy.

He was really desperate to get this relationship up and running begging me to make a pinky swear with him. That squid boy swears on his life that he will take good care of me and support me no matter what happens, while going down on one knee and holding my hands firm. My friends were in shock after this event and even more that I said yes to a guy I hardly know. But one thing was for sure; they supported me anyway and wish me good luck for this relationship. Beebs finds this adorable that Shrike tries everything to be the ultimate boyfriend for me....

Suddenly the squid boy turned around the minute I said yes. I looked over Shrikes shoulder, "What are you doing?"

"Nothing don't worry"

"Are you booking a date at the registry office?!"

...or ultimate husband.

Note to myself: Do not say everything out loud; Shrike might use it against you.

"How about this Thursday?"

I slapped him playfully, "Ehhh how about this...Thursday next year?."

He narrowed his eyes, "too long"

"Too soon."

It got settled: Thursday in six months.
