Chapter Nine
On Michael's memorial day, both families gathered in a hall filled with attendees, where every face was somber, and even the hardest of hearts could not hold back their tears. Victor sat in the front row, lost in thought, gazing at his father's coffin. His father had raised him, given him hope in life, and brought vitality to his spirit. As Victor recalled significant moments with his father—the first time he rode a bicycle, his fifth birthday when he played with his father with the cake frosting, and the times he was ill when his father rushed him to the doctor—his heart ached with sorrow.
Everyone noticed an elderly woman approaching Victor, gently holding him by the chin. Victor's flushed face from crying, his pale complexion, and his usual smile that had vanished were all reflected in his features. The woman, his grandmother, said, "Victor, I need to talk to you."
Victor looked at his grandmother, his eyes brimming with tears, and said in a choked voice, "Grandmother, what are you doing here?"
His grandmother responded tenderly, "I came to be with you during this difficult time. I wish I could help you. Do you have any special requests?"
Victor looked at his grandmother and said, "I feel lost. I don't know what to do now. My father was everything to me."
His grandmother sat beside him and placed her hand on his shoulder. "I know, my dear, and I understand your grief. But there is something I would like to ask of you. We live in a big house, and you can come and live with me. You will have everything you need there, and we will be together."
Victor was shocked by his grandmother's words. "Grandmother, I don't know. This house is all I have left of my father. How can I leave it?"
His grandmother tried earnestly, saying, "I completely understand your feelings, but we need to make sure you will be alright. It's not good to stay alone here in these circumstances. I am here to help you, and I think it will be better for you if you come to live with me. We have everything you could need, and you won't be alone."
Victor remained silent, staring at the ground while his grandmother spoke. Her attempts continued, but she did not succeed in convincing him. His grandmother said once more, "Victor, I know this isn't easy. But this is not just about a place to live; it's about family support and help. I want to be here for you."
