Weeks had passed since the chaos at the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and life had seemingly returned to normal—if Gensokyo could ever be considered normal. Today, though, something felt different. Marisa had blindfolded me, and for the last several minutes, I had been guided through unknown territory by her overly excited voice.
"Where exactly are you taking me?" I asked, holding my arms out to feel for any obstacles in front of me. The only thing keeping me from tripping over myself was Marisa's hand firmly on my wrist.
"We're almost there! Just a little further!" she chirped, clearly thrilled about whatever surprise she had in store.
After what felt like an eternity of walking, I sighed. "Can I take off the blindfold now?"
I heard her giggle as she hurried to my side and pulled the cloth from my eyes. "Tada!"
Blinking a few times to adjust to the light, I found myself in the heart of the Human Village, but it wasn't the quiet, laid-back scene I had come to know. The village was alive with people, bright stalls, and decorations strung up everywhere. Yukatas fluttered as villagers wandered between the stalls, their chatter and laughter filling the air.
Marisa stood in front of me, jazz hands-on full display, grinning like she had just pulled off the greatest trick in the world. "Welcome to the Spring Festival!"
I blinked, taking in the scene with wide eyes. "Spring Festival?" I asked, lost in the sudden change of pace.
"Uh-huh, uh-huh!" Marisa nodded eagerly. "Every year, the village throws this huge festival to welcome spring! It's all about boosting morale, celebrating new beginnings, and getting excited for the future. Trust me, you're going to love it! There's food, games, and memories to make. This should be at the top of that bucket list of yours!"
I glanced around again, still feeling out of place amid the festive atmosphere. "I... don't know what to say."
Marisa gave me a light elbow to the ribs, smirking. "How about thank you?" She tilted her head playfully, nudging me forward. "Come on, come on! There's so much to see!"
As I looked around, I noticed how everyone was dressed in their finest Yukatas. I tugged at my usual attire, feeling a bit self-conscious. "Marisa... don't you think we stand out a bit?"
She spun around to face me, leaning forward with a mischievous wink. "I thought you'd never ask." Holding her hand out, she wiggled her fingers. "Come on."
I hesitated before taking her hand, and she immediately dragged me through the village, weaving between stalls and people until we reached a small shop. Outside, Yukatas of every colour and pattern hung on display. The shopkeeper waved at Marisa with a warm smile.
"Ahh, Marisa! We've got the outfits you booked for rental."
"Thanks a bunch for setting me up with those last minute," Marisa replied, waving back.
"It's no trouble. We had a few people drop out, so you're in luck. Come in, come in! We'll get you both fitted."
I followed the shopkeeper inside, where I was taken to the back for measurements. The shopkeeper chatted away as they worked, wrapping the measuring tape around my arms and shoulders. "So, you're the friend Marisa was going on about, huh? She came by yesterday, practically begging for two Yukatas to rent. Something about your bucket list?"
I smiled softly. "Yeah, she's been going through everything I should experience here in Gensokyo before I leave."
"Oh, you're from the outside world?" The shopkeeper paused, their eyebrows raised in interest. "I've heard a few whispers about an outsider. Surprised Marisa took such a liking to you."
