Sophomore year.
Not low enough on the food chain to be fed on like freshmen, but not old enough to have the authority of a senior.
In the middle.
As a sophomore, however, Jimin already had more fame than was normal. Friends with most of the juniors and a few of the seniors, her popularity at age sixteen had soared, mostly due to her personality and beauty. She was widely known across the school. Freshmen and juniors alike vied for her attention- and so did other sophomores, but the other years were more scandalous. The seniors never tried their luck because, as said by Jimin's best friend Aeri, "If the years don't touch, neither should you."
Jimin tried to live by that.
She tried not to touch anyone, in fact. Although she was a bright and cheerful person, not letting anyone date her was usually a given- everyone who confessed got rejected, even those who thought they'd really had a chance. Upperclassmen were kind, and underclassmen were cute, but she preferred being alone.
Until now.
"Transfer student," Aeri announced, marching into the cafe booth where Jimin sat with Aeri's girlfriend Yizhuo and their friends Yunjin, Ryujin, and Felix.
"What year?" Ryujin asked, grabbing her straw and swirling it around in her milkshake before leaning forward to take a noisy slurp. "Are they cute?"
"Freshie, apparently," Aeri answered, plopping down next to Yizhuo and slinging an arm around her, flipping Yunjin off as she made a fake gagging motion. "And yeah. Didn't really see them. I just heard through the grapevine."
"M'kay," Ryujin said, already lost in finishing her milkshake.
Felix, however, didn't give it up that easily. "Why would a freshie transfer here mid-semester? It's already January. And as a freshman, too. Man, that would suck."
Aeri snorted. "Agreed. Not really sure why that happened. Whatever, though, they'll probably pop up in an elective or PE class that we have."
Jimin just nodded along with everyone else, barely thinking.
One moment Jimin was walking down the hallway, looking at a flyer for the school's annual Valentine's Day dance and events, and then she was on the floor, blinking in surprise, books around her and the back of her head aching.
"Oh my God," a voice gasped in slightly accented English. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry. Can I- ah- can I- um- help you?"
Jimin sat up, eyes opening a little wider, looking at a surprised round-cheeked face framed by short blond hair and round glasses.
"Rice... cake?"
"I think you've hit your head really hard," the girl said anxiously, hands hovering around Jimin's body. "Do you need the nurse?"
"You look like a rice cake," Jimin said, more certainly now. She smiled, a little dopily (but still beautifully, you know, if she said so herself), more sure of herself now. She reached out and patted the girl's cheek. It's so soft, she thought, removing her hand and continuing to grin. "It's cute."
The girl burned bright red, a blush overtaking her pale skin. "I- um- tha- thank you. Are you, ah- are you sure you don't need the nurse...?"
"Nope," Jimin said briskly, brushing herself and reaching for her books- but the girl was already moving, handing them to Jimin, smiling.
