part one

Karina was Winter's first love.

At the turn of the season, Karina was there, welcoming in the new weather with Winter, smiling and laughing and sharing. If it was spring, she would take Winter biking, and then they'd get bubble tea after and sit and watch cherry blossoms spiral onto placid water. If it was summer, they would go to the beach or maybe take a walk around town. If it was autumn, they would bundle up and play in the leaves. If it was winter, Karina would invite Winter over and they would drink hot chocolate and watch movies while Karina teased her then-best-friend about being the namesake of a season.

It was no wonder Winter fell in love; Karina was everything she could ever want- caring, affectionate, gorgeous, a joker, a sucker for the little things. That kind of person attracted Winter like a fly to flypaper, and Karina was the honey that stuck her in place: as they grew up together, Karina's place in Winter's life cemented itself faster and at a frightening pace.

In short, Karina was everything.

When they graduated college and finally moved in together, Karina was the same: always making an effort to spend time with Winter when Karina came back from work. Winter, since she got home earlier, would cook, and the two would eat together while either laughing or complaining about their long workdays.

But, as Winter learned quickly, all bubbles pop eventually.

Karina came back from work one day angrier than usual, and although Winter tried to approach her about it, she ignored her girlfriend's comments and stormed upstairs, going to bed early.

Karina's mood only worsened, and never got better.

The first few times, it was bearable. Karina would apologize after, but then she became more comfortable with her little comments.

"I can't talk right now."

"I have work to do."

"I don't want to talk about it, I'm busy."

"Please go away."

Winter could take a little bit of Karina's standoffishness, but then it got much more personal, more explosive. Karina would attack the fact that Winter stayed home more than she did, and accuse her of not contributing enough to their joint income.

"Can you just leave me alone? I'm actually working, but you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"

"I have a project due. I have a deadline. I don't have time for playing around."

"Why are you always trying to bother me? Can't you see I'm busy? I don't bench-warm like you. I actually do work."

The comments got more and more pointed, and Winter tried to fight back. She really did.

She tried so hard.

"Karina, please," Winter begged, standing by her girlfriend's desk, a half-empty cup of coffee sitting at the edge of the table. "I know I work less than you, but can you stop taking jabs at me like that? I'm here too. I help with the rent too. I live here too. I'm here to help."

"I don't care," Karina snapped, not moving her eyes from the screen, her fingers flying on the keyboard. "I got promoted. I have work. I'm not satisfied with what I have. Is that such a problem? Is it a crime to have ambitions now?"

"It's not!" Winter replied, her voice desperate. "It's just- you're taking out your frustrations at work on me-"

"Who else am I supposed to take them out on?!" Karina screamed, turning away from the laptop and yelling directly at Winter. "If I rant to someone at work, it'll get out and I'll lose my job. My family thinks I have a perfect life, so I can't talk to them either. I can't talk to any of my friends, because they'll tell me to stand up for myself, and I can't do that, not at this job, or I'll get fired. I can't take them out on myself, because then I'll lose my shit even more than I already have!"
